Show STORY I 1 OF WENDELL PHILIPS he was asked to do double duty regarding a benefit A number of years ago a poor man whose case had excited a good deal of sympathy among boston philanthropists conceived the idea dea of having an entertainment g given for his benefit and prevailed upon mr philips and the rev willam will am R aiger alger both of whom were at that time extremely popular speakers to give him what would be known in theatrical circles as a benefit saye the tile book buer buyer the affair a waa was very well advertised and it was expected that music 11 hall all the place chosen for the ebere exercises I 1 beg would be crowded but for ane some cause or other the patronage wa was 1 so light that the amount received for the tickets was not sufficient to pay expenses on the day following the lecture mr philips received a call from the beneficiary who in formed him that the expenses were 20 more than the receipts and mind just as the orator opened hn his lips to express his regret regrets athe the visitor added coolly 1 I suppose that of course you and mr alger will be responsible for the balance who really did pay the deficit I 1 dr do not klow but the incident pretty well illus the mental attitude of the people who live by the sympathy of the community |
