of obtaining an additional supply of water for the city a great deal of attention the gentleman however explained that lie did not think it wise to consider sir I 1 lamp tons proposition at this time lime it is i 4 understood that if the city should secure this water it would probably cause much contention among citizens who have used this water heretofore and who consider it their property mr west thought the city should be no party to any transaction which would result in litigation among s number of citizen citizens if mr II If ampton had the water for sale in his own right it would bo be a different matter as it is the gentleman would advise tho the rejection of the proposition the supply of water for the city needs increasing but the present proposition should not bo be entertained councilor boyle and alderman dee v were ere of a similar opinion mr hampton ampton II was present and explained the proposition more fully the matter was briefly discussed and on motion the proposition refused on the around that the city could not riot be ma made 0 a secondary party to any fight to deprive citizens of any r right ats which they may inay chave have ac acquire a by purchase or use the question of the electric light contract was brought up alderman reeve complained of the tile lights in tho the lights are not up to the standard and unless some further improvement Alderm alderman dec dee was not in favor of signing a contract for the light in its present intensity alderman west moved that the in to tho the committee and mayor to make a contract bo be rescinded the motion was carried the mayor explained that the principal object of the meeting was to die dim cues cuss the city revenue and necessary improvements in order to learn what amount of money the they might expect to have for use tho the gentleman had examined some of tho the expenditures expedit ures of the city and had made some calculations tor for ins ills own information and tho the guidance of he the members of the council by an elaborate system of calculation the gentleman proved that the city would have about in the treasury at the first of the year which can bo be applied on the cit city debt or in public improvement T this IE amount with ith what the city can also borrow if nc necessary cesary will accomplish a good deal carefully applied mr boyle eaid said he lie might bo be somewhat of a doubting thomaa thomas but his figures did not agree with the mayors and h ho 0 had come to the conclusion that there would bo be only about in the treasury at the tile first of the year the mayor layor however looked over disfigures his figures again and 10 lol the amount had bad increased these would be more than 2000 tho tile other members wanted the mayor vavor to I 1 try again but the figu figures re s fail failed n I 1 to 0 in make I 1 tho the amount greater a second time mr dark clark moved that the liua car question be laid over till bann that in it be referred to the street iroe committee attee to take up again at the first possible time in the spring mr reeve thought the tile proper time to prepare to sprinkled the street streets was now decide about tile carte carts where to get tho the water and every other detail jut as likely ai not a sp sprinkling i enkling cart will bo be needed thi this winter swinter rl and if it is started deven even bowtho now the gentleman thought thou glit it would not be consummated till early s spring mg the city is losing more through throng the absence of watering carts than it would cost to run tho the carts alderman deo dee thought thou glit the cita should have good streets to put th the e carte carts M bd law main street the south part of it should bo be graded however the gentleman thought the council should now pass a rm resolution ution to have its carts re ready ad for use by tho the middle of next apri As ma a solution lution of this question u estion councilor B baylo lo 10 moved tha that t the water qu question eption h it this matter bo referred to the tile committee on water supply and that the matter of securing or contracting tr for carts bo be referred to the committee on public buildings buil dinga the motion wag was carried alderman motion that plans for a city hall bo be advertised for wag vlas called up acevo ve waa was in accord with mr west arment to commence work ona hall the gentleman would also like to see bee union square laid out and improved and all the old buildings removed from it ho ile thought however that tho the money could couls lie ile better expended in perfecting the water works ban than in building a city hall the tile city also needs a good system of sewage this tills would not make bud such a showing to the tile e eve but if people come here bere and find fin ale a bood system of maago they will lie he better satisfied eatie fied than to have a city hall to look at tile health of the citizens ie Is paramount the city is becoming polluted lut by tho the garbage rubbish that re decay cays on the surface ur face instead of being removed in a proper manner the council show that it him the hea health tit und and coin fort of rf tile people ot of at id heart I 1 mr boyle called attention to tho tile fact that last spring he the council promised water for tha th comet ety lh I 1 I 1 1 the water system needs d Is extending in various parts of boin the water I 1 a I 1 c r however c could uld not I 1 be f tunnelled dished tunnel led it if the water system I 1 is 8 not extended 01 led 11 and nd improved the gentleman is in fay favor O 0 r of thorough thor uh rejuvenation and improvement pr pro 0 of the water works so that at least gallons of water can mn bo turn alln t frn f inked i ed alio 1 0 c citizens atiz 0 ns fifth street rn als also sho should u ld be graded and south main jain street s hould also be attended to mr west contended that nothing a of I 1 equal I importance with tile city hall ilal I 1 pro project C arian need d 1 be neglected ted work co could af d bo be commena commenced ed on the structure end and the construction of it bo be proceeded with pith as the finances will w ill permit the gentleman urged immediate action A commencement should shot bo be made alderman reeve urged the improvement of the tile water works and alder roan rilan dee advocated the further improvement pro of the streets tho the debate was a protracted one and was participated in by most 0 of f the mem members rs at the close the question called for when W bell Al dirman n reeve amended lorae alderman A motion that the motion bo be laid on the table for three months the amendment was put and atie a tie resulted reeve keeve dee boyle and brown voted tor 0 r the amendment west dark clark and jackson voted against it the mayor cast his vote with the nays and the original motion was called up it was w s put to the vote and carried on a division alderman bole immediately moved that not to exceed bo be expended on the w m ater works forthwith the matter was discussed briefly and mr west moved an amendment that the water committee bo be instructed to braingin bring in a report showing the improvements required irad in the waterworks water works and the cost oy of said id improvements the amendment was carried mr west moved that the question n of sewage what sowers sewers could be constructed with mith advantage and the cost be referred to the committee on public building and the sanitary committee to bring in a report at an early date alderman alderman reeve considered the motion a good one but would a ii little tie premature in preference he lie would move that the street committee be authorized to improve main iain street from ogden bridge to fifth street mr dee seconded mr reeve I 1 P motion aldarman west said his motion mo tion was not intended to involve tho the expenditure of money on the sewage matter yet buethe but alie council wants to know wh what tit it is boing to do and the coat that will be incurred some of the members were desirous of having main street graded from eighth street to the weber canal mr tr reeve explained that lie the grading I 1 ng of 0 main INI n street S et from eighth street to the bridge brid would w bo be all that tha t could bo be done by next april which doca does t the he C council want done the grading of main street south of eight eighth h or the grading of main tain direct from ogden bridge to eighth Final finally lythe the committee was instructed to grade main street and expend in so doing not more than per week mr reeve withdrew his motion mr boyle suggested that the crossings cros on main street bo be attended to at once onee mr west renewed his motion about a system of sewage in the hor hope that a second would bo be obtained mr bovie boyle seconded the motion the motion was carried alderman dee moved that nn an adjournment journ ment be taken there m a a no second to tile motion and 3 mr f r boyle arose and called the attention on of the chairman to the fact that fifth street hill will bo be very muddy tins this w inter and that mr west 1 I second the motion for adjournment the motion was carried and the
