the misrepresentations of a certain person in salt lake city to the swiss consul in san francisco unfriendly action ie is being taken by tho the swiss govern ment against our missionary elders in that country A public warning published in the berner erner an sieger and signed by the chief of police eggli r recites eci t es that the person in salt lake city before alluded to whose name does not appear but who is vaguely described as the representative of a foreign state charges that some swiss residents in salt lake city were in a very sorrowful and suf suffering fiering condition through poverty and the chief of police cautions the public that mormon emissaries are now laboring in the canton of bern in order to mislead people of both sexes through all sorts of inducement inducements and not without success to emigrate to utah and winds wind sup up by declaring that he co considers it bis his duty to bring the above facts to the notice of the public and thus warn them of this mormon enlistment president schoenfeld says in in his letter believing that the chief of police would not assume such a authority U without official instruction from the mayor of the city wo we there therefore flore thought it wise to call ubon upon him and learn the real truth of the matter and also present the truth of the case if an opportunity would be granted 1 I therefore personally called upon pon him on saturday afternoon on and had an in of about half an hours duration with him he treat edme edmo very courteously talking freely U upon the subject from him I 1 leo learned ri ed that it had bad been brought before the and that that body wad wu now investigating it with the object of taking definite action in the near future and that he the mayor had bad been acting under their instructions in author izing zing the chief of the police to in eert sert tho the notice in the paper he iffe adyseh me t thain basin order to avoid further and more serious trouble it would be necessary to have a certified statement from tho the swiss people living in salt lake city to the effect the statement made to the swiss consul in san francisco was untrue and that the swiss people in our territory were not in a suffering and destitute condition also that as soon as a statement to that effect had been forwarded tu salt lake city he should bo be notified of it on the instant we had the gleasure cleasure of meeting with elder icho cho enfeld who came over to consult with president resident wells in relation to business matters connected with the mission soon after his arrival in liverpool he received a letter from elder L F P monch whom ho lie had bad left in charge in in bern which stated that there had bad been some interference with the em emigration ig ration of a company of swiss IS saints int a who were on the eye of departure for liverpool intend intending ing to go with the may company but it was not expected that their departure apar would be seriously delayed elder monch also sends word that brother boosi one of our mission 1 ary elders was arrested arre eted about 20 miles from bern while speaking g to the children in Sabbath school elder loos had bad had bad a hearing before the zofingen Zo fingen court and altho although ug nothing whatever was sustained against him he lie was arbitrarily remanded back to prison it does not speak well for the official sagacity of these swin dig nit aries that they illey should accept as facts such euch vague charges and state ments men te as appear to have haie been made relative to the condition of the swiss in salt lake city without any particular identification of persons and circumstances and wo we venture I 1 to 0 o predict that when the truth comes out it will be found that the swiss authorities hav have been the victims of some unprincipled apostate or auti anti Mormon who is ashamed to let lot his name be as public as ins wis charges we hope that the examination into the facts of the case promised by the swiss government will be thorough and impartial they the will learn that there is more destitution and suf r af feio fering in switzerland within a few miles M e of their
