Show TO A correspondent A short time ago the arral HERALD D received a communication signed perplexed in which a number of questions involving certain points of doctrine were propounded we have refrained from referring to the matter till order that we might give the r subject ubbe et careful and mature consideration and must bay that we have concluded that it would be very unwise to discuss such questions as those propounded pounded by perplexed through tho columns ofa of a newspaper however we will offer to perplexed a few words of adai ce of course we presume that be he is s a member of the church of jesus christ of latter duy saints the principles of tho gospel when viewed by the light of reason and scrutinized under the genial influences of the spirit of god evolve no paradoxes or incon incongruities grui ties they are harmonious in in every particular and sublime in their nature yet they cannot be fully comprehended ended by one person in a brief period of 0 time more than this they may not nil all be comprehended in a lifetime in our experience we wei have known disputes to arise over certain points of doctrine or passages of scripture when ho the pointe points in question eyen even if they should be finally viewed from the same standpoint by the disputants could be of no parti particular enlar present benefit to th the e parties disputing the principles pl es of the gospel are progressive one principle must be understood before another can be investigated A child does not study vulgar fractions or proportion before it has bus learned the simpler methods of computation it is a fact that if the latter day saints would seek to thoroughly understand and put in practice every prine principle i 1 ale that god in in his m mercy 1 ercy AS has revealed so far t they licy would have no time and no causo cause to be conjecturing dring about matters which pertain wholly to the future in conclusion we will relate how bow a gentleman who was investigating the doctrines of tha the church was led him to enquire about a certain principle which he then considered untenable the elder had preached to him faith repentance tanco and bap hall cism and had bad promised him that if 1 he lie would bo be obedient to god be he should know if the doctrine taught to him was true but this was insufficient ruffic ent the inquirer desired information upon other subjects the elder rg replied plied that it was not good for a person to eat more pudding than he could digest atone at one time the answer had the de faired effect the gentleman investigating was baptized and the apparent mystery in time became clear to him the moral we believe is obvious to all |
