Show A LIE manufactured out of whole cloth by a drummer the following article which appeared in tho cincinnati inquirer and was reprinted in the omaha daily bee a paper which at the present time has a man in this territory drumming up subscriptions script ions and job work was handed to us by a merchant in this city and we reproduce it in order to show how the mormon people are represented by some of the men who come among them to solicit business for the various wholesale houses in the east the writer is supposed to be one of the fraternity known as drummers and his narrative isas follows on my arrival at lehi I 1 was directed as usual to the bishops house for entertainment rapping at the door I 1 was soon confronted by a large heavily built broad shouldered fellow who asked me ia anything but polite language what I 1 wanted I 1 informed him that I 1 desired entertainment for tha night where are you from california sir where going south I 1 answered after plying me with a ew more questions of a similar nature he invited me in on catering the house he turned to me and said do you see that rifle up there looking up to the point indicated I 1 saw one of those long murder ous rifles commonly called mississippi rifles resting snugly upon the anglers antlers of a rocky mountain buck I 1 told him that I 1 saw it and much admired the artistic manner of hanging it well roister that is our law maker when anyone comes among us and commits any dirt we do not hesitate for one moment to use it now listen to me I 1 am ahe bishop of this settlement I 1 have two wives and several daugh fers how if you can promise me not to speak to or even look at women folks you are welcome to remain over night keep your eye on that rifle and mina what I 1 told you can you do it it was a mighty hard job but I 1 agta 1 luell iuliu lliel Z aum roand and if it was hia honest de sire why of course I 1 would obey him at that time he bade me follow him into an adjoining room where hie family were assembled I 1 was dimly conscious that there were several females seated around tho fire he drew up a chair for me and bade me be seated turning to the women he gave them orders to prepare some supper he himself taking my bordere for whatever I 1 wished all this time I 1 dared not turn my head or look towards any one but the bishop I 1 knew that his eyes were upon me and that his wives and daughters were studying rac closely 1 I was greatly embar rashed but withal managed to dispose of a hearty supper at the conclusion of which we returned to the bitting room it was jy this time quite dark and his son a large athletic fellow coming in the bishop told him to entertain me and at the proper time show me to bed putting on his overcoat and a fur cap for it was quite cold he bade me good night saying that he was compelled to attend a ward meeting before closing the door he pointed to the rifle over head and said remember young man what I 1 told you it was positively unkind of him to remind me ded old gun was constantly on my mind I 1 bad been some little of their treacherous work and had haard much more T know wh af they were capable of doin gand under the circumstances circum dared not disobey his warning the door closed and he waa gone were on lay right the eon on my left to make ae su ranco doubly sure I 1 turned my back to the ladies and lacing the young man entered into conversation with him one of the ladies got up and went to the door 71 times finally she came up behind me and bluntly asked if I 1 waa a mormon I 1 hardly knew what to do I 1 had beep warned against speaking to or even looking at anhof the women was she trying she certainly knew that I 1 had been forbidden to her under penalty yet there she stood calmly inviting me to my fate the young mans eyes were upon me of perspiration started oat on my forehead do not lear to speak young man be has gone and will not return before i midnight she said and ut she laid her hand on my bead its all right stranger eaid the eon ite aubright speak up and lookaround look around much as you please ajl Thelic ewanow broken and turning I 1 said that 1 was nut mormon r s thank god for that sho eaid and then the conversation became general I 1 was told all about the heartaches and sufferings rings of the first or original wife how in almost every case they had been deluded into joining the mormon faith under false pretenses pretences what shame and mortification came over them when it was found aut abat a second or third wife be taken into the household I 1 was rather reticent and did not express my opinion on tho subject aa I 1 otherwise would have done the two daughters were comely and about ten they bid me good night and retired A half hour later I 1 was conducted to my room by the young man ascending a pair of stairs and entering the door to my right 1 was somewhat amazed to find myself in the bedchamber of the young ladies who had by this time retired their lamps were still burning and having forgotten all previous warnings 1 allowed my eyes to roam at will around the room and naturally they rested on two dimpled faces beneath snowy caps As I 1 was enjoying the scene I 1 was brought to a realization of my position by the deep tones ot the young man who said this way please and taking me by the arm pointed to a bed in an adjacent room remarking you will sleep there the rooms were connected by a double doorway the doors had been dispensed with and consequently quent ly we were virtually in the game room I 1 was soon snugly stowed away and as naught divided us but an imaginary door my courage revived I 1 was I 1 began to analyze ray feelings here I 1 was in the house of strangers true one head of the family had forbidden me to hold any communications with the other part while the other part of the family had vetoed the first injunction and I 1 had obeyed them both here was certainly confidence it struck me that that the young ladies were exceedingly vivacious as they kept up a constant titter and their of nothings were somewhat embarrassing embar assing to my sensitive nature I 1 was just beginning to congratulate myself oo 00 having to much confidence reposed in me by my host when what was my astonishment to see the young man dragging a mattress mat trebs into the 1 marinor ma kinor ra them As he waa going to llo down no a large sized six shooter and placing it under hia pillow lay down to sleep I 1 was virtually under arrest there he lay between me and liberty all ray dreams of confidence were instantly knocked into a cocked hati was not borry when the buu arose next morning |
