Show AFTER TWO MONTHS t r I 1 president cleveland has been at the bead of the federal government only a little over two months and owing pressure of aepli cants for office and the necessary labor of mastering clerical details he has bad little or no opportunity to shape any particular great policy or give any striking exhibition of great ability yet nevertheless he has thus far proven truo to the simple reformatory plans which his inaugural address fore cast and which will result in much good in the way ot promoting the economy and efficiency of the pub lie service in all things thus far he has been true to a most exalted conception of his official duties in many instances he has risen above all mere paltry partisan considerations and acted with an independent vigor that is positively admirable he has sadly disappointed hordes of hungry office seekers but he has agreeably surprised the country by his dauntless clearheaded clear headed adhere ence to the best principles of good government wherever he finds irregularity or incapacity in any branch of the public service there is no hesitation no temporizing but the objectionable official whatever hh rank or however well propped up by fri endsor party lie may be is promptly superseded in bis position by a new appointment and those whom mr cleveland has chosen for the various post eions where vacancies existed or ha ye been made through the re eig nation or suspension of former occupants are so far as can yet be known quite i able if is natural of course that the president should trust members of his own party and those entirely lin sympathy with the success of his i administration m preference to his political enemies who are only de sirous to see him fail he finds too that a long lease of power has corrupted ther such a cf extent th abc its followers who press forward for continued pre ferment arcas a rule only petty spoil seekers who cannot be trusted one single official act among hundreds of a similar nature which speak volumes in favor of the new administration is the order of secretary whitney Vh itney directing the immediate dismissal of the foremen of the government works at mare island lavy yard because those gentlemen at recent elections gave their subordinates folded tickets and marched them to the polla like slaves making them bold the tickets in plain sight antl th ey were deposited with the election judges this kind of political tyranny is utterly alien to all wholesome republican principles and yet it has flourished unchecked under aang saries of for mer and it must bo admitted that president clever land ia doing a noble work in waging relentless war on all sorts of officers who have made themi selves s and despotic by virtue of their practices in using their official positions as a part izan lever to unjustly influence elections in personal interests |
