Show J M OPINION i A on the present condition of attali affairs last evening mr john mi coy of the salt lake collegiate institute which was cs by the presbyterian mis sion went west mr coynor was accompanied by mrs coynor it having been found necessary to repair to the pacific coast for the benefit of the ladys health they will go to los Angeles first and from there to riverside the gentleman was found on the train by an ogden HERALD reporter who questioned mr coyner as to his opinion in regard to the state of affairs in utah today to day what do you refer to he asked well in regard to business and the religious and social condition of things mr coyner replied that personally he was not much interested in the business affairs of the territory put he thought when this matternas matter was settled and all parties worked in harmony that the prospects would bs a great deal brighter the educational cat ional work is prospering and is angood condition the college of which he is superintendent is crowded with pupils to what mailer did you refer just now mr coyner to the present labors of alio judicial courts I 1 believe it is the duly of every person to live within the laws of his country and I 1 have always recognized recognised the right of the government to enforce its laws then I 1 suppose you think the federal officials are doing perfectly right in its present move against the people of butali certainly they are and I 1 am satisfied judge zane is doing the beat he can to make matters right I 1 am personally acquainted with him if this matter of polygamy was removed it would be all right I 1 believe every man has the privilege to worship as he pleases and has the right to follow his own convictions I 1 claim this right for myself and would carry out fearless of what others may do or say then mr coyner you admit that the present prosecutions for gamy are unjust no sir you must not misunderstand der stand roe but you surely are aware that these men are convinced that this matter for which they are cd is the of a supreme power what would you do if you were in the same circumstances tha t is a matter about which I 1 was talking the other day there are two ways of getting around this question if I 1 wish to evade the law being convinced that I 1 am doing right roust say one thing while I 1 am convinced of another that would never do on theother hand I 1 would stand by my convictions and receive the punishment if the law was against what I 1 believed and that which my conscience told mo was correct and I 1 would not seek to evade the law but suppose you were satisfied you could not obtain justice sir coyner what then I 1 would put roy trust in providence he controls all men and I 1 would not fear the outcome mr coyner are you in sympathy with the present method of packing juries in the courts I 1 do not understand thein to be but you know certain persona arc excluded from the juries at present do you not yes and rightly too A roan may believe robbery to ho true such a man would not bo permitted to serve on a jury I 1 haye the best of feelings toward everybody I 1 have taken a peculiar stand in regard to this question but should I 1 not return to utah and probably 1 may not if mrs conners Coy ners health dues not improve I 1 leave with goodwill towards all how long have you lived in utah ten years I 1 came here from alic indian mission in idaho in 1875 the reporter wished mr coyner a pleasant trip and retired |
