upon the badiea who have bean engaged in making the preparations br the meeting during the evening the A H nels son read a report of the condition of the W 0 T U in ogden and as it is a matter ot interest to all citizens of ogden we reproduce it entire to the president and members of the comans womans union of ogden city utah LADIES it eloms fitting at this time to give more than a bare statement of the financial condition of the union ye have many friends in ogden who have aided us with words of without which our labors would have appeared a thankless task and with more substantial assistance without which we would have toiled in yain and it is but just to them to tell them what wo have done with the money they have so generously riven the comans womans christian temperance union of ogden a branch of the national union was organized in august 1883 its object is indicated by its name it is strictly non part izan and nonsectarian it asks all who wish to advance the ca usef temperance and the cause of christ to unito under its banner and labor common end and lit asks no questions as to individual methods or beliefs hero the episcopalian and the baptist the mormon and the methodist can work side by side in perfect harmony soon after our organization we began to take counsel together aa to the best means to bo employed to further our object and it was decided to establish a free reading room and public library a free reading room where the unemployed and the homeless could always fand a pleasant place in which to spend their leisure hours in the best of company the company of books a public library from which all lovers of literature could draw books to read at home altheir oarn convenience it was agrest undertaking we were fewin few in number and poor in purse and each burdened with her own cares and responsibilities but it was undertaken and soon became an accomplished fact A soliciting committee was appointed who called on the business men ol 01 our cita and presented our plans ts them donations of money and books flowed in liberally and we opened our rooms with about volumes on our shelves which number we have increased from time to time us our abilities would permit the daily city papers and the leading weeklies of the land have always been on our tables thanks to the liberality of our local publishers we are also under similar obligations te the salt lake wo alao subscribe to the leading magazines and periodicals as lauy of them as we can afford and after they have been read they are carefully preserved and bound our rooms are open every weekday from to and from pm where all are welcome to come and read books papers or mag their pleasure our expenses aro for librarians calary room rent fuel and light to expenses during the aret winter after our organization organisation we gave literary liter arr entertainments at the reading booro at which we took up collections but this was too much of a tar not only on our few workers ant also on our patrons arid e adopted another plan we sent out who canvassed tho town and asked the business men to subscribe a certain sum that they would be willing to pay each month to support the reading room many agreed to assist us and did BO fora time but one byone they fell away till now our list ia somewhat reduced A few there are who have stood by us nobly who meet our collectors bachi month with smiling faces aad pay in their it a email eloa usually or a dollar and it seems to roo that each business man in ogden could afford to give so much or rather so little for BO good a cause many of them spend as great a sum daily for cigars and do not even think of the expense I 1 may remark incidentally that the men who are the moat able tp pay are not aa ft rule the men names remain on our looks our staunchest friends are among those who find at necessary to practice economy our total receipts from all sources alace october 1884 the time when our present plan was adopted has been seven hundred and nine dollars and 75 cents with this wo have paid our expenses aa heretofore explained pla ined havn added more than a hundred and fifty volumes to our library wl have in tho bank the BUM of one hundred doll arfi and ninety two cents A detailed statement of receipts ana since oct ast 1st tho time at which I 1 took the beoka is prepared for your auditing committee but it ia not boat to tako up the depaco with it here our librarians report shows dally average attendance of readers u 10 total number of cooka in library number added since oct ast 1st 1880 ag number in circulation at present time 24 of course in tho winter when the weather is bad and the evenings are of te tho rooms and the number who draw books out is much in excess of tho figures in conclusion I 1 again ask our friends the business busi nesa man af pf ogden to deal with W liberally i Tho work we have undertaken la a noble public charity wo have no greater interest iii the work to be accomplished than you have wo put in our labor and our money and wo ask of you only a very little help and our is assured wo do not ask it asa alms for wo feel that we have a right to ask our causa is your causa the causo of morality and right living our interests those to be bene fitted are not only the homeless and friend leBa but your bonn and daughters the entire community in which we livo and in whose welfare we are all interested A H NELSON treasurer the ladies who hayo taken up this labor of love are to bo highly complimented upon their and it id to be hoped that our business men and all who are interested in the welfare of the young and in the cause of temperance will continue to give to the organization their support that its present bril biant and encouraging prospects may be fully realized |
