Show THE LATEST LIBEL copy of the indictment lately found against editor aneser some time ago the hen i ALD announced that editor R maeser of tho southern iian had been arrested for libel that time we were unable to say just what the alleged libel consisted of the following is a copy of the indictment against editor maeser the people of territory of utah 1 against R maeser J R maeser is accused by the grand jury of this court by indictment of the crime of libel committed as follows john J gleason on the day of february and continuously from bait day of ary 1886 until the ast 1st day of march at the county of beaver territory of utah being duly coninis wag acting as united states deputy marshal in and for the territory of utah and more particularly as deputy marshal in hargo of second judicial district of utah the eforoi said R maeser was on tho day of january 1886 at the county of beaver territory of utah editor and publisher of a certain public newspaper styled the southern Ut onlan printed and published at the city of beaver aforesaid it intending to do fame the character of said john J gilason GI cason and to cause to bo believed eliat the eaid john J gilason had been cuilty of gross misconduct in the execution of the duties of his said office of deputy marshal of utah territory and thereby to expose him to public hatred and contempt did unlawfully and maliciously on the said day of february at the county and territory aforesaid print and cause and procure to bo printed and published pub lishe in said public newspaper styled the southern etonian Uto nian a certain false and scandals ous libel of and concerning slid john J gleason and others and of and concerning hia official conduct in said office of united states deputy marshal in and for the territory of utah which said false and scandalous libel ia to the tenor and effect following that ia to say worse than tho outrage ona pro ce edings enacted at the thomas house were those carried out at mr castona Ea stona place here the minions of the law entered through windo being no man at homeslay ed sad dayoc the women were compelled to rise from their beds in their night clothes and stand before these men ind listen to the reading of subpoenas one young girl being very much abashed arose at their COOT mand from ono bed and fled to an other but again she was macoto rise and stand before the law protected pirates until they had the subpoena upon her it has developed that these outrages were carried out without oven a warrant giving tho perpetrator a tho authority A bearch was instituted when it was known that mr easton was not around home small drawert to bureaus wash standa hauled out and their contents emptied upon the floor ono could readily imagine it was not so much mr easton as hia were after no gentleman would be engaged in anch unwarrantable it would bo well for alie people to keep ft sharp eye upon these burRl arloua proceed ines and treat those who engage in them as the case merits to tho preat scandal and injury of the said john J gleason and contrary to the form of the statute in such case made and provided and tho and dignity of tho barno peace WI foreman of the charles W zane aalst aast U S att |
