Show SERVICES i y i T of the G A B in the Union house on sunday s r of mr carrolla 8 speech on sunday morning the mem bers of the G A R and knights of pythias assembled at castlo hall as per appointment and marched to the union opera house where the memorial services were held the house was filled with friends of the members of these organizations who had assembled to hear the services which were gotten up in memory of departed heroes arid friends the M E church choir furnished singing and miss virginia ludden presided at the organ the services commenced by the choir singing an anthem 1 I was glad they said unto me this was followed by the hymn who is on the lords side rev josiah mcclain read the lesson the psalm and a few verses from the second chapter of the acts of the apostles at the close of which prayer was offered the key mr thayer said it was necessary relieve to the post from as much expense as possible therefore a collection would be taken to defray expense of these services A collection was then made and liberally responded to the lecture of the day was delivered by the reverend mr carroll who spoke from a text found in and 2nd timothy and 2nd chap ver 3 in referring to the late war the reverend gentleman said the old and bitter feelings had passed away arid today to day allare harmonized the blue cannot hate the brave gray cannot hate the blue there is now another foe which is thinning the ranka of the G A R that noble warrior robert S lee has passed away and gen grant lingers on the threshold 1 while a nation watches the outcome with intense clings and interest we should honor them for their noble services for the war in which they engaged was a war of principle against wrong of liberty against slave ryot loyalty against treason the soldiers who fought cur battles have instructed the nation in the principles qualifications ficat ions that are necessary to make perfect soldier will also charac teme perfect man for a good sol dier is intelligent obedient courageous and true many incidents of the bravery and self sacrifice hero ism and loyalty of our soldiers were graphically described by the speaker and many examples given showing the life of a true soldier might well be patterned after in every day life and in our endeavor to serve god previous to the war the na tion did not look upon citizenship asit does now the people were mercenary and thought very little of being members of this great republic and all were not free but the black man hasteen has been freed and not only has this been done but the good work will continue among serfs of the south and serfs till every roan and woman shall stand up with dignify in their native birthright to sense and recognize that they have an immortal soul that lives hereafter there are three or four things which now threaten our government the monopolies the whisky ring which in a measure controls the ballot box and the lawmaking law making body these with the twin relic of barbarous days aro raising their heads against our nation invited all present to join alie army of christ and fight under hisa banner that at ahe close oo lites battle hey may hear the commendation well done thou good and faithful servant enter thou in the joy of thy lord bang an anthem how lively is zion and the services closed with benediction by the rev mr |
