Show TO UTAH LUMBERMEN the following circular is being sent out to all lumber manufacturers in this territory utah sept 14 1885 dear sin in conversing with many of the lumber manufacturers and dealers concerning tho recent action of the government officials in dealing with the lumber question in utah and adjacent territories an almost unanimous desire has been expressed to bays the question fairly and squarely tested in the courts not with any desire to obstruct the officers of the government in the performance of their duties but only to ascertain what our rights are in the premises if we aro breaking the law by manufacturing lumber and selling it to others and it hag not hitherto been eo held by the interior department who supply the people with the same for mining agricultural and purposes then I 1 for one am to know it and propose to govern for I 1 cannot adix presume no other manufacturer can iilo lumber and run the risk of havivi ha viii it all confiscated at any moment such a business is not legitimate and I 1 am sure manufacturers had no idea they were placed in such jeopardy the lumber industry of utah em ploys several thousand men every season and while it would work great hardship to throw so many out of employment for which they have prepared themselves with teams wagons and necessary outfits and also render so much mill property valueless still it is better for us all to thus suffer than to run the risks of confiscation and imprisonment better discharge all theeo men and give the employment to the truckee who work in the mills there for from that locality and from othor parts must the supply for utah and other western territories come if the present government officials succeed in closing down the mills in the territories a drw of to get our delegate to congress to pro sent the question to the interior de apartment part ment in its true light for it is generally believed the department does not fully understand the timber question of this bocky mountain region and also of giving the leee to each manufacturer and dealer to contribute means to defray the expense of making a test case in the courts it has been thought best and I 1 have been urged to initiate the movement to call a lumb ermens convention to be held at logan bocc tober ath 1885 the time and place of meeting will be announced on that day through the press of logan you are very cordially invited to attend the same and participate in its proceedings ce if for any reason you can not attend please express your views by letter yours truly DAVID ECCLES |
