Show A PLEA FOR A stranger visiting utah for the first time i will bo very forcibly impressed with the attitude of the local political faction other and also towards the tw great national parties which divide the political strength of the whole nation the peoples party of the territory is composed chiefly of democrats this political division has an overwhelming majority and it u accordingly opposed by a mongrel political coterie composed of republicans renegade democrats and political and men of every political complexion who can under the broad banner of anti mormonism and stand firmly on the platform which contains essential principle and that is to the effect that the cormons mormons ought to be destroyed means or foul it matters not the conflict between tho peoples party and this motley anti Mormon coterie is of a bitter and vindictive nature which has but few parallels in the political history of america this extreme acrimony is not only unnecessary and absolutely un called for but it la unwise even to folly it is true that when opposing political factions are contending earnestly for the accomplishment of distinctly opposite objects and the interests at stake involve the most sacred and valued rights and privileges of the feeling is apt to run high and the ordinary civilities and decencies of political agitation are then always liable to be more or less ignored but still there is no adequate excuse for the personal bitterness and extravagant individual and journ ranking animosity which is present BO commonly manifested by men and papers identified with both local political factions gentlemen peaceably contending for or against the most vital principles can gain nothing iby rabid and vulgar fury A moderate use of vituperation pe ration may indeed be resorted to without grave impropriety on rare occasions and the usual scathing charges and counter charges aro of course to be expected but when men go so far that they cannot maintain their personal dignity or exercise even a self formal courtesy in their intercourse with others merely because of a radical difference of political or religious opinions hey overstep the propriety of successful or genteel opposition members of the peoples party may have laid liable to this identical criticism but weare inclined to think that the greatest excesses of uncivil and unjustifiable personal partisan acrimony have been arao ti ced by gentlemen of tho antl mormon persuasion we might cite numberless cases wherein non aaen of high social standing and unquestionable ability have been ostracized or practically driven out of utah by the anti mormon press aided by the spontaneous personal co opera tion mormon agitators only because such respectable non mor mons were not radical blatant and aggressive enough to uit tho mad views of the leaders of the anti mor non party this is no only wrong but it i bad policy no far teeing comprehensive politician would ever permit such a thing that it often requires much elf control and sensible discretion to receive sharp and stinging blows from the tongue or pen of an enemy without flying into a momentary state of angry confusion beuthien bu thien are not fit to dabble in politics or champion great political issues who lack this qualification which ia in reality primary ingredient of individual civilization itself A chieftain who enters the politician cial arena to grap pic with an opponent ought to remember at all times that he appears there as a of a prin caplo or as tho exponent of a par nicular policy and when he is not acting in the capacity of anch a representative ho ought to observe scrupulously all the amenities of manly urbanity and civility even to ards bis antagonist does not clely low the level and res we enter this plea in behalf of courtesy in political controversy in utah because we do not care to BOO grave and doughty politicians ikc angry school boys who can only bandy ugly epithets and make faces at each other when their temper has passed the bonds of reason and argument becomes an impossibility |
