Show Lester Park borron HERALD As I 1 am excessively ces fond of the study of nature that martof it particularly which embraces the culture of trees plants and shrub various kinds some times am tempted to take a ramble around leter parkland admire the growth of the young plantation which was formed in a praiseworthy manner a little over twelve months past by bur city fathers in the above park I 1 was present at the festival aud reunion re union of the young ladies improvement pro association of the fourth ward and enjoyed myself very much in listening to their recitations their songs their glees and choruses which were all pleasingly rendered by the whole corns pany in the spacious pavilion erected by our city fathers for public gatherings of all descriptions and which in connection with the park itself has now become a place of very great resort it is very avii dent from what we have already seen of the uses to which lester park has been employed that it was an institution greatly needed by the rapid increase of the population in this thriving city on the day in question i it was highly interesting to notice the games and gam bola that were put into practice by the young folka on ahe eastern poro tion of the park and the contrast on the west of the beautiful grove that was growing up which promises to give shade and beauty to the future adf that rural retreat re my reason for thus occupying a portion of your space maj editor is to draw attention to one or two serious detriments to this lovely place I 1 ascertained that there was not any man engaged to take the general management and care of the park that theman now employed was only partially engaged to irrigate the trees etc and that cf course is but a short time I 1 think this is a very great oversight on the part of the projector pas in all pub tic parks there is a gatekeeper or man in charge in each park in this country and in europe the pavilion needs protection from rude boys break windows for sport the trees require training now while in their incipient growth to biye them shapo and symmetry previous to their bc coming too hugo to handle easily the unsightly sunflowers sun flowers and other weeds and underbrush der brush want cutting away to give a chance white clover lo 10 coyer the ground there is in fact i sufficient to keep a laborer busy every day during the growing sea son and partly inalie winter aur city council have been at considerable expense thus far in bringing the earlc to its present promising condition and now it would in my opinion be a piece of parsimony of tho worst kind to retard the progress of this playground play ground for the masses ayob ejecting to hire a man to keep m order the ten acres now so admirably organized ia man could be obtained think for a day who would do all that was required for the object desired hoping cura gity fathers will give their attention to the above philanthropic object 1 am yours respectfully |
