Show A SNAKE IN THE GRASS while we entertain strong opinions concerning all ail the leading questions of the day and are particularly emphatic in ilour our views touching local issues here in utah we wo are nevertheless ne eless most mos t cordially w willing 0 ia to further any and all plans or projects which aim aird at the substantial benefit of mankind at large or tend to elevate and build up individuals divi dividu duals alg or local institutions that are worthy of the approbation and support of honest well meaning citizen citizens we therefore strongly deprecate the unnatural bitterness which blights baights the hearts and scorches the feelings of men who honestly profess different faiths and espouse opposite sides in the discussion of the so called utah question ve we cherish the most unqualified good will ivill towards every man woman weman or child who truly has one candid desire to promote the general welfare of this community and while we may err in our zeal to uphold the right and discourage the wrong no one shall ever be able to eay say truthfully that our intentions were not pure and unselfish even if it should be found that our judgment was wrong it is true that when we are conscious of rectitude and feel called upon to speak for or against any religious political social or individual anat matter no auxiliary consideration whatever shall prevent us from setting forth our views boldly and unequivocally then if we should blunder blu ilder and it is only human to make nii mistakes stakes all 11 wo we ask is that friend or foe will kindly point out our fault for as soon as we discover it we will hasten to make all possible honorable amends wo we have faith in this sort of frank journalism we know that it will command the respect and support of every fair and honest person in thia this and all other communities and when from any cause whatever we can no longer carry out this policy we will lay jay down our pen graceful ly y and complacently and immediately cease to edit this paper we shall not strive to please every body in all things for we recognize how foolish and impossible such an attempt would be in that respect we shall radically differ from our ogden evening contemporary which with transparent double dealing bids for the support of the mort mons and the anti mormons cormons the temperance men and the lower grog shop liquor vendors and by its inconsistent sneaking course makes all who have any knowledge of its indifferent existence feel as if it many turn out to be a snake in th the grass egrass Itis it is evidently striving to tu extend its meager and precarious circulation under the guise of inoes sycophancy with the delab crate intention of treachery towards towar id such subscribers as may chance to be deceived b by y its ostensibly nondescript independent character and therefore while inclined to bo be charitable towards a feeble little paper we are constrained to believe that the ogden evening news newit is isa a humbug dishonest in its policy and underhanded in its motives we would be bif glad if we could know that such is not the case but unhappily the proofs jofs by its past editorial utterances show unmistakably that it intends ultimately to follow on a paltry iry scale the co course urse of the salt lake tribune which even christian ministers come to our office to denounce in this matter we nye are animated by no professional jealousy our would bo be beneath all notice whatsoever were it not disposed to deceive the public we desire to live as a journalist so long iong as we can be honorable outspoken and candid and we take pleasure in in aiding others to thrive when they pursue a straightforward frank course but when we neglect the first great principles of journalism and shrink from the duty of speak ing without duplicity we ask no mercy and when we find others recreant in this way it would be unjust to the public and contrary to the rules which we have laid down for ourselves if we failed to warn the community to look out for the snake in the grass |
