condition of affairs aa its op they exist toay today to day in the church bea bearing ring bis his tea testimony to tho the work t of god reiterating his assurance in the ariu triumph aph of the plans of god as made known to the latter day saints to live in humility before god that they may merit ilia his approbation and receive his continued continua blessings BISHOP E W WADE exhorted the saints to diligence in the work which they have been delegated to perform doing nothing 9 except they ask gods blessings upon their work always setting examples worthy of emulation APOSTLE it 1 3 GRANT addressed the tile congregation he had before attended me meeting etin I 1 g ln in this city and was therefore highly pleased with the 66 opportunity of meeting here now he was delighted with the reports and thought reading them was au excellent plan while it may be interesting to hear the reports from the bishops too many of the same class clam become monotonous and anti hence the benefit of reading them it will probably bably also help to get people to attend more numerously numerously y 0 on n saturdays Ys though he considered the saints should make no selection because of the speakers because it i is 11 a duty to be at meeting m e ct I 1 u at all times whenever e possible wong wrong should never neve r aver bo 0 permitted by up n as the least wrong will grow until there will be no condemnation of your conduct by your conscience whenever you hear a man saying that he lie is tired of hearing brother so and so speak on the word of wisdom you may believe that such a man doea does not live up to this revelation it itis is seldom a man who observes a commandment man mitu dment condemns those who do not though these may be doing as well as he is in other directions we should ke be liberal towards each other and strive to overcome ov evil without boasting over it those who a are re changed suddenly or come into the church by or through miracles will seldom prove strong unless something startling occurs continually or a miracle is given n to him hia weekly to keep him S up we should strive to be equalized and well balanced in our work and undertakings no man will bo be blessed who misses no meeting for twenty yeam but does loth nothing III g else for the work of god gad yet such men often condemn those who do other work but miss meeting occasionally ahse who are in one particular line of duty reminded him of building the third story of afu ofu a house first neglecting 0 the foundation and the first and an gd second stories men seek the higher laws but neglect the smaller duties of life this will never bring them the salvation they seek we should prepare ourselves in all the labora which we have bave to perform APOSTLE JOHN HENRY 8 addressed the audience expressing hia hit pleasure with the bishops reports hu he noticed however that among the good there were some who were not so faithful this I 1 ie no doubt correct as ait if we were all 11 perfect we ive might debere the lord to close up the work sooner or be fore all mankind mank iud should bear the word of god the house to which elder grant had referred ia is a fair sample of what many are building religiously and otherwise but the sure reward is given to him who holds out faithful to the end using his means for the good of his fellow men those who neglect their duties may vay certainly corta look for failure for every man must earn hia his salvation by the sacrifices of his lifes labors A man dian who does this will ivill stand when the storms of adversity blow and the winds of persecution se howl he is a man who has built a foundation that will fiand and hold bold hia big noble structure in all time we must prepare for every storm and none should congratulate themselves that they are free from the persecutions to which some of our out brethren bre are sub ejected for the time will come and at no distant day when all will be i tried to the score core regarding diD I the persecution which is direct directed L 1 against us th there ere can be no doubt of its ultimate result gods work will triumph wo we have been told that it would come to draw out the characteristics of manhood within us until il we shall learn where to i let the storm come let it beat but let us ask god in faith that we wd may stand seek him by that living faith which conquers all fear that we may learn his promises promie ea which eive give us hope bope of eternal life lif e there is no doubt doub tin in the speaker mind that this till work is of god it i I 1 is s as ascertain certain as a that light t shines into this room or that god lives all should seek to know this that they might have power to endure faithful to the end and receive the reward eward r that they shall get who have their names written in the lambs book of life the choir savan and I 1 the conference adjourned until sunday morning I 1 prayer by bishop P G taylor fro from page 2 ca conference NT PERE N C R f continued from wom pagel pace 1 i SUNDAY april 19 19 10 a am 1 the congregation was called to order and the choir sang I 1 A 1 il the glori glorious day prayer by E elder ider lodi farr hinging singing aaka ye sal saints ants of god awake SUPT burr RICHARD BAI gave I 1 hi n the following report of tho the edition of the sunday schoola schools of ilia weber stake tho the total number of pupils enrolled is id with an average attendance of 2206 2200 tho rho total number of officers and teachers is 13 tho the first assistant ten dent elder L F monch has gone to germany on a mission in the west weber district another school was 0 organized january 1884 the tile increase in tho the enrollment of scholars during tho the year 1884 was las quile quite a number of preceptor classes have been organized and the general improvement of the schools keeps pace with the remarkable addition in numbers according t ti statistics flur furnished furnie hed there are about in the country who are eligible to attend sunday school who are not enrolled this 1 estimate includes all the unmarried young men and women as well as children over six years of age belonging to the families of the saints these facts were regarded by the tendency with a grateful heart to god for his manifold blessings which have attended the labors in the sunday school work most alost of the officers and teachers observe the word of wisdom and for character and efficiency the teachers may be regarded as the best beat that can be found in the several wards A marked improve improved ment has been made in gand congregational pinging singing is is now the rule the last selection of sunday school songs has done moret more than ban any ny ather other agency to make the binding singing in in the sunday schools universal while quite a number of classes aasel have been organized to teach the ie children to read m music JOHN SMITH said it had been a longtime long time since he ie had bad had the opportunity of listing listening p to tho the instructions of the E elders iders in in our mountain homelie home hence nce he ie would prefer to eit sit and an listen bu u still he be had hail no desire to shirk any responsibility he knew that the ie saints who are alive to their duties have joy in mingling together the speaker desired to speak leak under the influence ortho spirit arit of god our position before the e world today to day is a strange one abany any of the best minds odthe of the day have lave been watching the tile docial lem cm we are seeking to work out and ind they aro are observing closely the growth ol 01 this work and many of these people would assist us and come como out and join our ranks did they but dare face the ie opprobrium of being called a mormon the hatred which is evinced toward us is not because of our wickedness because we can go 90 nto into any of ot the towns in the world and find fina sin to a greater extent than can be found in in these mountains mountain the ie human family is is continually eri engaged 11 in endeavoring to amelios ate c the co condition of those far removed from them hem while the feces cities of their immediate surround ings are entirely forgotten we lve find that lat the tbt tendency odthe of the present age is a to find fault with the saints of god od As in the past stories are manufactured and mis misrepresents r bioni ons are published just t as was said id by christ ye shall bo be hated for or my names eake sake etc the speaker had noted the similarity of the hatred which existed oward toward our brethren and that which existed toward the savior the latter jatter day saints removed themselves from the haunts of civilization not because the principles olour of our faith would work any wrong upon those by whom they were surrounded but because they did not wish entangle to their fel in daffis curties through their own practices and also that they might enjoy their f faith hith unmolested by those who did aid not choose to give them that privilege the latter day saints acknowledge the hand band of god in all things for be he hag has purposes and designs to be carried out and without the spirit of persecution which is exercised against tho the people these designs could not be accomplished A few months ago the speaker was looking through a book and and come across a document which purported to bo be a copy of the ch charges arges preferred against the savour when he was tak taken en before pilate one of these charges was that he was a seducer and another was that he waa was exciting the populace to reb rebellion ellion by speaking epe aking of a new government the speaker was struck with tho the similarity of these charges when compared with those preferred against the saints today to day but we out all liti our god has promised ug us he be will see gee us through if we will obey him we have been told the nations 0 of f tho the earth will arr array against the wor work their power of god men bien have recently been imprisoned for teaching tho the go pe in switzerland Ger germany mapyl aca scandinavia i dy i navia and ather I 1 places T they I 1 not imprisoned fa foe any acknowledged act were wron wrong bu but t because the gospel of jesus they thoy nothing jag else for christ is pot of god GO to do but to eay say the people to do commanded ded us that god baa has obey liia his and we must these things world wie we desire lo 10 eve ve the law laws the forth to our missionaries es go world as representatives of jehovah andia the world will not receive their message mes me they must buffer the tile consequences and when the time arrives our god will gay say it is enough wo we nia may meet with things thinas that may malc make us V a little trouble we may have to submit to trials and difficulties th that at will try our natures but we have espoused used a cause that ilia cannot bo be staid and it will continue till christ shall reign king km of kings and lord of lords i it is our duty to sustain our friends if there are any amon among us who are willing illin g that we should live we should do to them there as we would have them do to us but wo we should not support those who will use the means we place in their hands to persecute us and they cannot expect ua us to make them wealthy |
