Show THE T HE PEOPLE SAY I 1 A citizen on oil the liquor question it is with regret that I 1 learn that tho the city council at its recent sitting contemplated a change in the liquor I 1 li bonso question the r reasons set forth aro arc hard bard times but tho the liquor dealers have always been complaining this way and if their complaint i is to be cn eli pertained bert with equal justice all the merchants in town have the reason every merchant in town is suffering from the depression depres aion in business and ift he numerous assignments arc are any evidence then every class ot of business has buffered much more in proportion than the liquor business out of the many failures that leave occurred during the past two years only one liquor establishment has had bad to make an assignment and they so arranged their business that the stock was disposed dis ased of without being thrown on tae the roar mar ket and the establishment is still running but we are told that they have paid more money into the city treasury than any other business and should be treated with cons con on that account no doubt they pay in in more money but I 1 would ask if the sale ot of intoxicating drink does not ne cess irate the exp eap of a great proportion of the funds so paid for police ser vices the liquor business may be legitimate but it is certainly the cause of a great proportion pro portio n of tho the crimes committed in our city chy we have had a low liquor license here in years past and from forty to fifty saloons in in active operation today to day in in consequence ol 01 a higher license wo we have about twenty tw enty plenty certainly to supply a town like ogden I 1 understand ter of reducing the license is to come up next friday evening he be fore that time I 1 hope the public will be heard from for I 1 am satisfied that nineteen twentieths of the fax tax payers and voters of this city if they can be heard irom from will dav or no redaction reduction in the benses censes rc re to and a goodly number would rather see the liquor license increased than lowered OF or THE PUBLIC |
