Show l PASSING OF " GET-RICH-QUICK " CONCERNS. The salesmen for the " get-rich-quick" concerns and the mushroom mush-room insurance companies have suffered a rude jolt from the crimps put in the business of the concerns which they have helped to "float." They are already beginning to mourn for the "good old days," and those days certainly netted them handsomely, $1,000 a week being nothing unusual for the smoothest of the tribe. The sums they made and the sums they spent, mo3t of them spent at once, have not been generally realized. But now the legitimate concerns, which have something substantial to sell on conservative commissions, are met by the fact that these salesmen, the geniuses of the salesman's craft, have been getting abnormal pay. They are spoiled. In Chicago recently the secretary of a big and substantial concern said: "As for a force of salesmen, I find that is a mighty hard thing to get. The man who walks and talks, who heart-to-hearts his winning way among prospective subscribers, who puts the pen into their veakened digits, at the psychological moment, and says irresistibly, 'Sign right here' he is the man who does the work. Yet he is few and far be-tween be-tween and mighty hard to find. Why? The oil man and the mining man, the kind of man the postal people are now chasing so hard, they paid any old commission up to 80 and 10 and 10 and 10 per cent; they are why, at least in part. I can't pay 25 per cent, but that makes a fine living for a man who has not earned 80." |
