Show G. A, li. VETS ELECTOFFICERS ATLANTIC CITY. N. J., Sept. 22. John K. Oilman of Boston for commander com-mander In chief, and Rochester. N. Y., for the next place of meeting, was the winning combination In the national encampment of the G. A. R., which opened its business session today. to-day. Tho other officers elected were: Senior vice commander In chief, Charles Burrows, Rutherford, N. J. Junior vice commander In chief, William James, Jacksonville, Fla. Surgeon general, John L. Smith, Spokane, Wash. Chaplain in chief. Rev. Thomas Harwood, Albuquerque, N. M. The new commander In chlff had an easy time of 1t in his election, but Rochester's selection as the next encampment bite has a string to It. Tho veterans derided that the encampment en-campment ton go to the New York state city on condition that satisfactory satisfac-tory rates are secured from the railroads, rail-roads, and if iu the Judsrment of the executive commItl- of the national council of the administration the rates ore not satisfactory thf committee can select some other city. Ixs Angeles. Denver and Springfield. Spring-field. Ill , wore also after tho encampment encamp-ment and San Francisco Invited the veterans to the Golden Gate city in 1915. A veteran from the southern city itiM the encampment would also hear from New Orleans bifore that time. Tho proposition of $1 a day pension for life will doubtless be shelved by the encampment. The committee on pensions, which made lis report today, decided against the proposition on the ground that it would be too expensive ex-pensive to the national covernment. H was figured out that $1 a day would Increase the pension roll more than $100,000,000 a year and that It would take half a bl'lion dollars iu the next two years for pensions. The pension roll now amounts to $io.ooo,ooo. The report of the pension committee commit-tee favors the McComher bill now In concress, removing the restrictions that bar from the roll women who were married to veterans after June 27, lSf0, and who have since become widows within three years after they marry a veteran. If Influential members mem-bers of the G. A. R. can prevent, the present encampment will take no action on the matter of placing the statue of General Robert E. Lee iu the national capltol. Leading members mem-bers of the G. A. R. declare they do rot want to offend the soldiers of the Confederacy. |
