Show PROGRESSIVES ORGANIZING. At a meeting in Provo, Thursday evening, the Progressive Republicans Re-publicans of that city organized a league, and, preliminary to adopting adopt-ing a declaration of principles, gave expression to the following on the coal agitation: "The Herald-Republican is making a great howl, but we cannot can-not trust them. We believe they are dishonest. That paper made the same howl two years ago and we know it was for a purpose. When the cash showed up they laid down. They would sell us out now as they did two years ago." The platform adopted deplores the corruption .of wealth; indorses the initiative, referendum and recall; declares for the direct primary, for a corrupt practices act, for the popular election of United States senators, for a public service commission, abolition of railway passes, the prevention of the use of corrupt money in elections, elec-tions, for publicity of campaign contributions before the elections, for a state bureau of publicity and immigration, for the amendment of the state constitution so as to permit of the commission form of government, for a graduated income tax, for the entire separation of church and state "believing that the surrendering of individual conscience and conviction in civic matters to ecclesiastical influences or dictation is debasing to citizenship and vicious in its effects on popular government;" favors a law making the possession of a United States liquor license prima facie evidence of the violation of prohibition laws; calls for a more stringent law for the abating of nuisances, and favors an expert tariff commission and a revision of the tariff This promises to be the beginning of a well organized movement within the Republican party in Utah to win the entire party over to the side of a Republicanism which is as close to the people as was the party when it had for its leader Abraham Lincoln, the first of Republican Progressives. |
