Show have been unable to establish this us a fact. It U bclk-ved by the police that ho Is an ex-convict. SUDDEN ENDING OF iJlOOK The honeymoon of John McDermott, a former conductor on the Union Pacific, Pa-cific, was brought to a sudden termination term-ination la6t evening when he was arrested, ar-rested, a few hours after his marriage to Miss Alta Woolsey, on the charge of having forged and passed more than a half dozen checks aggregating more than $100. McDerniott's operations ore claimed by the police to have been the boldest ever perpetrated by a forger in this citv and the investigation so far has disclosed the fact that the man has 'been passing the bogus paper about the city since Saturday. The police were not notified of the Illegal operations oper-ations until noon yesterday and the arrest of the man was accom pished by Detective Burke, six ho-irs later. He is now locked up at the city jail pending preliminary hearing nnd his bride, who was not aware of the man's crooked dealings, Is overcome-with overcome-with grief. McDerniott's plan was to purchase a small bill of goods and submit one of the bogus checks In payment, taking the balance of the cha-k in cash or legitimate paper. The police at this time are unable to uscertalu just when McDermott began be-gan his operations or to what extent he has gone but they have so far discovered six had checks, in every instance of which the man received a sum of money, in change. To facilitate his operations MjeDermolt hired a horse and buggy at the Dee livery on Twenty-fourth street and it was this fact which lead to hii arrest. The following Is a partial list of tho.-;e victimized, together with the amounts of the checks passed on each party: Jones Coal & Ice Company $20.00; Mrg. Zlllih Jones. $2o(0-George $2o(0-George McBiide. $10.00; D A. Smvth, two chedts. $27 0t); Mrs. Mary J iea-vitt, iea-vitt, $20.00: In several of the cass the name of Jnmes Halverson, assistant cashier cash-ier of the Ogden State Bank, was forged to the checks nnd for this reason rea-son the parties did not question the alidity of the paper. The forgery in these cased was therefore not discovered dis-covered until they reached the bank on which they had appareuUv be-u drawn, It Is !cllcved that other bad checks were pasted after this but apparently apparent-ly McDermott ceased hiK "get-rlch-quick" game long enough yesterday afternoon to get married Shortly before 5 o'clock ho and Miss Woolsey appeared at the county clerk's office A marriage license was procured and McDermott expressed a desire to be married on the spot Deputy County Coun-ty Clerk John Bl;Uh therefore performed per-formed the ceremony in the7 presence of newspaper representatives When It was learned that a man angering MeDerraott's description acl exchanged horses at the Dc barn earlier In the afternoon and had not yet returned (he second outfit.
