Show SENATE PUSSES ERRiGATIOn BILL Washlncton, March 2. After a brief general discussion the bcnate today to-day passed a bill authorizing the Issuance Is-suance of f.n.ooo.o.')! worth of certificates cer-tificates of Indebtedness for the completion com-pletion of Irrigation projects already under way. The bill is intended to supply enough money to finish these works and It Is contemplated that the certificates certi-ficates will he retired ly money derived de-rived from the sale of lands redeemed redeem-ed by (hi improvements. Senator Clay of Georgia, made a speech In opposition to the principle involved rather than against the bill itself. He predicted that tho time would come when a direct annual appropriation ap-propriation of; 50 or million dollars dol-lars would be necessary to carry on the reclamation work. He entered into a general discussion of government govern-ment expenditures saying that he considered con-sidered as uselss all the efforts made to reduce the vast sum. "These investigations by commissions commis-sions invariably cost more than they save," he asserted. Mr. Clay then referred to Senator Aldrlch's statement that if he were running the government, ho would reduce re-duce expenditures $300,000,000. |
