Show THE GASOLINE MOTOR CAR. The proposed gasoline motor car service from Ogden to Park City calls attention to the car that promises to revolutionize railroading and drive tho electric car out of Interurban service. It is said that D. H. Harrlman evolved the scheme for gasoline motor cars on rnllroads. Some years ago E. H. Harriman was ordered by his physicians to take the rest cure and. to get as far away from business as possible, preferably to tako an automobile trip through Europe. Harrlman went, took his family with him, a few friends and many servants. One dozen automobiles accompanied the party. There were autos for tho baggage, autos for the servants, autos for the guests, autos for the children and autos for Mr. and Mrs. Harrlman. Tho first day out Harriman enJocd the scenery, but admitted that ho could improve it with a railroad or two. The next day he wanted to get out and tell a farmer that he was not plowing deep enough. He wished also to tell a vlneyardlst that he knew nothing about pruning, but was dissuaded dis-suaded from this purposo by his family. fam-ily. The third day he began to look into the transportation equipment. Ho learned exactly how many revolutions each wheel had made, tho quantity of gasolino consumed and the cost of running per mile, and estimated cost of wear and tear. No detail escaped him. He reverted to the subject all through the trip and mado his own observations. He tried experiments. The rougher the road tho more pleased Harrlman was with tho working of his train of autos. Hills which he had regarded re-garded as so many obstructions to progress were welcomed and taken either at full speed or slow. Everj test was made. When E. II. Harrlman reached New York the first thing he did was to order or-der W. J. McKeen, Jr., to commence building gasoline motor cars. The first cars turned out by the Omaha shops wejc not successful, but Harriman told the superintendent of motive power not to be discouraged and not to mind the expense. He had the Idea that it would be a success and was determined deter-mined that the project which he had thought out while on a European holiday holi-day must be perfected and bo a part of his railroad system. |
