Show VALUABLE NECKLACE STILT Fifty Thousand Dollars Worth of Pearls Lost at Mardi Gras. San Francisco, Feb. 24. A $30,000 pearl necklace belonging to Miss Jennie Jen-nie Crocker of this city was stolen during: tho Mardi Gras ball. The theft was not reported to the police until tonight. to-night. Though numerous Pinkerton detectives have been at work on the case -since the loss was discovered at o ciock mis morning, no ciue to tnc robber has been discovered. Miss Crocker was one of 402 gue6ts Invited to the ball, the list Including virtually all persons prominent socially so-cially in this city, she was also a guest at the more exclusive dinner given by Mrs. Alexander, beforo the ball. Miss Crocker wore the Jewels at tho dinner and still had them on when she donned her costume for the ball, that of a little, school girl with short blue and white checked dress and-white sun hat. She went to tho ball room at 11 o'clock with the pearls j hidden under her simple costume. She did not become aware that they had disappeared until nearly 4 o'clock In the morning. Miss Jennie Crocker Is the 24-year-old daughter of the late Colonel Fiederlck Crocker, one of California's Cal-ifornia's wealthy pioneers. She Is ono of the richest women In the west, having hav-ing inherited a large share of her father's fath-er's estate. The necklace, which has been ranked rank-ed as one of the finest In the west, if not In the country, Is composed of 53 magnificent pearls, all flawless specimens, speci-mens, which were brought by Miss Crocker from Europe some years ago. They were set hy Shreve & Co., a local Jewelry firm. As soon as Miss Crocker discovered her loss she reported- it to her relatives rela-tives several of whom-were present at the ball, and the aid of the Pinker-ton Pinker-ton detective agency was sought at j once. The detectives, four of the best ; men In the sen Ice of the local agency, ; have been working on tho case all day, but have tailed to discover any clue that might lead to the -recovery of the necklace or the capture of the'thlef. |
