Show FOUNDATION LAID BY THE PIONEERS. This is the 7fth anniversary of the arrival of the Pioneers in basin of the Great Salt Lake. On July 24. 1817, Brlgham Young and his party camped on the present site of Salt Lake City and started in a most modest way to build a home for the Latter Pay Saints in the then wilderness of the west. The entire group of Pioneers was far! from NMng strong in numbers or worldly possessions. The men, women 1 and children, in a strange land, sensed j the importance of struggling to exist1 and the proceeded without delay to J malra nrnnarnllniK tii nrv llint ihcv might reap. They became the first white irrigators, and they planted and WOrlnd and prayed, in an effort to escape es-cape possible starvation. Having journeyed hundred? of miles over a wilderness and. being far removed re-moved from civilization, l hey knew the need of being sclf-sustninlng. and so they began with determination to ward off penury and want. As a result re-sult of being thrown on their own resources, they became a resourceful people They grew strong in adversity adver-sity and built with enduring firmness In turn they gave to posterity frugality, frugal-ity, industry and determination and high purposes Utah could not have had a better beginning, had it been within the pnw er of the Pioneers to have elected their lot As character in the individual is j made by overcoming difficulties, the Pioneers were mouldrd in the best of character-building environments j They were brought close to nature. They labored to exist. They met pri- j vation. They were taught thrift The vanities of life were cast off Their surroundings drove heme with great j torce the lesson of honest industry j They had the emotional developed j Their common experience aroused the sympathetic chords of the heart and, ' soul. They had to be Interdependent.! They leaned og one another, became j bound by common fate and learned I 10 live for each other. That was the beginning of Utah To-' day the people of Utah are thankful for all the triumphs which men audi women of strong hearts won in those, days of long ago. Thankful that there j were sorrows to be obliterated and heartaches to be overcome, and that In the struggle Utah was given a rich Inheritance in manhood and womanhood. woman-hood. An |
