Show MUST PAY GRAZING FEES, SAYS WALLACE WASHINGTON, Feb. 6. Secretary of Agriculture. Wallace has replied to Representative Addison T. Smith of Idaho that he cannot grant his request1 to waive the payment of grazing fees In forest reserves for 19 22. Ho suggests sug-gests that tho western stockmen appeal to congress. Representative Smith had presented 1 the resolution of the Idaho Cattle and! Horse Growers' association asking re-1 lief. Secretary Wallaco says In reply I thr t, while ho is in sympathy u Ith the stockmen, and realizes thol; predica-l incnt. ho does not feel that he ran rrr.l orr.mend remission of the 1922 grazing fees. The government derives about $2.-500 $2.-500 000 annually from grazing fees, but ho points out that not more than 25 per cent of tho stockmen of the west use the national forest ranges, and If this foo should be waived, the government gov-ernment would be discriminating In favor of this 2C per cent, while the othci, grazing on privately-owned lands, would not have such relief. In congress is to grant relief, he ihinko it should extend relief to all stockmen regardless of what range they use, and If that be done, thoso using the national forest range can apply their relief to wiping out thol cost of grazing fees. |
