into the mode of construction of the pueblos of new nei mexico and arizona started for the scene of or his labors again last night he ile will continue tho the work of ot last summer and will make mako a general ethnological collection illustrative of tho the customs and cons con of the arts among the present pueblo indians one ono of the more interesting features will be a collection of pottery of which these people le make inake a great variety skillfully lully fIly decorated ec Orated and ad of clA elaborate borate an and tasteful designs much of this material will be sent by the bureau fo the new orleans ekpo expo exposition i tion the national museum in ill which the offices and workshops of the bureau arc are situated is being rapidly fitted up for the purpose for which it was designed but there are still odd corners fenced off from the public gaze in one of these divisions a number of workmen are engaged I 1 under the supervision of mr victor victor Men Alen deleff constructing a series of models of seven pueblos of tho the province of tusayan these towns are tewa town se chom avi a yi 1 colpi ij AIR shong ni vi she pan cl 11 1 01 vi shimo pa vi vi and 0 ral be which were visited by the spaniards about the year 1640 1540 and are still inhabited by descendants of the Indians whom coronado then saw faw these models are being made from the most accurate measurements and plans supplemented by sketches and photographs of every detail which vilich were secured during the field season of 1883 the models are all being made to a uniform scale sufficiently large to show distinctly all the minor features of the architecture and construction that have been followed from time immemorial by those interesting and secluded groups of men they represent very support beams upon which boughs bo and dried grass are placed and covered with a cement formed of mud the houses are gen generally crolly rectangular in shape and are built to the height of four or five stories in the lorm form of terraces one upon the other originally there were no means of ingress or egress upon the ground floor ad mission mission being gained through doors in the second story architecture is be being ing T prepared from the data cecur secured during last seasons field operations the cliff ruins res berred to occur principally in canyon I 1 di chelly in northeastern arizona these canyons have been formed in a soft stratified limestone in the present instance to a depth of nearly 1000 feet in ili the bottom of the tile chasm a small stream known as de chelly is found Oyer overlooking looking this stream and perched upon the hardened ledges that have been left by the erosion of the sandstone are seen numerous cliff ruins ruins varying from a single rom to cluster clusters that would easily accommodate several families these are usually found usually grou grouped ped around a contra central ruin or small na pueblo which is built u upon oil the hat fiat odthe canyon bottom one no of the models in course of preparation illustrates one of the ruins of this letter class with its cliff dwelling overlooking it wherever the tile a action tj on of the weather
