stating that the good work was more efficiently done than ever there is a better corps of superintendents and teachers than abany at any former period although etere there are a few who lack in the necessary requirements to whom the speaker addressed some words of advice showing that the purpose of the sabbath schools is to promote f hith in the hearts of the young in proportion as wo we have faith ours ourselves elies we will create faith in in the hearts of others in this connection elder ballantyne referred to the faith promoting series a publication tending to create in the young minds a feeling and knowledge that there is a divinity in the church and that a divine power has originated organ izeman ize dand still maintains and inspires the work of the latter davs days the speaker further dilated on the principle of how it can bo be obtained and anti liow how it is to be retained anil and increased exemplifying his ilia ideas with incidents from the history of the savior and his disciples he ile closed with pray praying u tor for the blee blessings sings of god upon I 1 al an f engaged 1 in tile work of sabbath school ht that their faith may be strengthened and alid they may bo be enabled to nourish I 1 ithe faith of those thos m in an fn their charge ELDER ULDE R L P F reported the condition of tho the day school c stating that the statistics of school enrolment and attendance are somewhat below those of last year still there is a progress in school matters although there is yet a deplorable lack consequence of which several schools arc are closed the speaker pointed out the necessity of able young men and women being educated for tho the profession et teachers he also stated that the attendance at the schools is very large ogden cita cita alone having over children in in her public schools at p present resent and intimated that there soon might arise the necessity for a new building to accommodate the scholars elder elter further referred 0 to o the recently published articles c on the tile connection of ignorance and vice in which it was shown that utah territory compares most favorably with the generality of states and territories ELDER E B II 11 ANDERSON then read the statistics of the weber stake of the church of jesus christ of latter lator day saints forthe for the the quarter arter ending oct 15 1883 waicy which showed a total ot of officers aud and anem bersand a grand total of souls he lie also presented the written report of the Y L al I 1 A of the stake which made a favorable showing i ug as did tho the report of the relief reh cl societies elder anderson then orally reported the lie progress of the work oi of mutual improvement in weber stake bein being glad to state that there is a notable progress among the youth of zion a spirit of god a a spirit of the gospel spreading in ic t their air roiden tand and leading them into the truth many of the young men are manifesting i a determination W tc improve and serve the lord still there are gre ye yet the some of the tile young be longing to the families of the latter day aay saints who have not joined the tb associations and the speaker apin t cd ed out the of all the th young people attending the meetings and assisting the efforts of the Y A M st at I 1 A and Y L al I 1 A that they may way become a credit t to 0 the community and shining lights to the world the older people should encourage the cause of mutual improvement by their presence and counsel at the th meetings s and otherwise the bishops fe be was happy to state were taking a great interest in the good work and he hoped they would continue to help the cause along he alao also advised the associations to study the preceptor in their meetings so as to acquire a better knowledge know eded of the principles of the gospel JOSEPH F r next addressed the audience he ile had been much pleased in listening to the reports presented this morning the brethren reporting manifested fe d that they are interested in their work an and Z calling ailing and are zealous in furthering the welfare of the people of god the work in i question involves the caro care and training of the young who are the hope of zion those more advanced in ago age have mostly been gathered out of the world after having been more or less imbued by the notions and ideas of the outside elements which itis it is difficult for many to overcome over rome hence many of us are not possessed of all the falness of faith or integrity of purpose desirable the next generation fration era tion and more still that following will be more fully prepared purified and sanctified for the coming of christ it would be impossible without a miraculous change not looked for by us to expect the Lama around us to ba be changed i in a generation from their present low and degraded condition into a white and delightsome p people eo e ill inspired by light and in intelligence gence it is in a similar manner with us we have the desires desire Q likes and appetites of our fat fathera heru fixed and anti fastened upon and in us many of these come in direct contact with the will of heaven still it is so very difficult for many to free and exalt themselves from the contaminations and imperfections of tradition still we must labor and strive incessantly to cleanse ouri ourselves elves so that our children may became become a better a purer a more wore godlike god like generation than it is possible 1 sible fur for many of us to become hence the necessity of training the young in ir the schools and associations so that they tl I 1 e be filled with faith and endowed with all the gifts and powers promised to tho the faithful even becoming able like christ to command the very elements wo must strive to attain to a condition in which we approach god and slid ask him with wilh full undoubting unc ousting ting confidence that he ile will grant but if it wo we ask him and fail to receive i it is because wo we ask am amias is ifs we roust must aak ask nothing doubting for if ifa i we do we will not have our prayers prayer granted abe speaker had hall often met men considered as good men I 1 who would confers confess that they had I 1 no faith and could not believe beli eye 1 who whose sc fault is it Is it god goda 1 Is i 1 th the e lord 3 p partial a artial gra granting lfting to one I 1 and withholding from the other no the tile fault lies lips the man I 1 who has not faith because the power of his tradition ion and the training is so strong that lie cannot break through the crust and humble himself in humility before the lord shall we condemn conde inn such men met by no means they will be judged according to tho the light they possessed and rew rewarded ardea according to their works they will however not attain to tho the powers and blessings that others will yet bocan wo can all obtain faith to a greater or less degree thus men who in their hearts doubt the atonement tile divine mission of joseph smith etc have faith enough to stay with the church tp to pay a little tithing to attend the meetings once in a while and anti god will have mercy on oil them and bless them in a measure although it will take ta kethero them ages to attain the glory promised the faithful hence aga inthe necessity of educating edin bucat in and training our ebil children drea to teach them the principles or of the gospel that they may be filled with tho the light of faith and work righteousness human nature is hu xi nature rono to evil and sin and some philosophers even claim that there is is no amelioration odthe of the race to bo be expected on ohp other liand hand wo ive bavo have nevii who rho claim clain that mau man i lias has ever been from a it tadpole to I 1 his Is present conf conflitti liti I 1 on and many arc are of tho the idea iden that the world is in it better letter higher condition now than it ever was the speaker however showed how adam when first placed on in the earth was a perfect man and instead of mankind improving and comin coming near nearer er to god it is fast deteriorating teri orating labing and getting further and rind further away from froin him flim for this purpose I 1 lia has god established his kingdom that his gospel as revealed and promulgated in th these e s 0 latter laya days may rescue the tile fallen n and degenerated world from infidelity debauchery and corruption the same prine principles pies that were owl bya by alam and abraham and other holy men are destined to rei generate the world even what the present e nt world arc are boasting so zes mu much e of their telegraphs railroads navigation etc was all krown to the holy men of ancient days bays as laid down in the prophecies cies those men of old inspired of god knew more than this generation with all its vaunted education and learning where is the source of all light and wisdom who set this earth in motion who placed tho the stars in the firma firmament ment who made vegetation grow the creator who is a being infinitely superior to man lie ile made the spear of grass and makes it grow afresh every season can man make a spear of crass can man make gold or silver or diamonds he ile cannot god has organized it all alan cannot accomplish anything save savo by tho the light and know knowledge ledo and power of him who is all light and knowledge take the simple principle principle ciple of perpetual perpetual motion man alan has las racked his brain rain for centuries and lias has yer failed to operate it while god has set the worlds rotating in perpetual motion on their axes aies god has re revealed himself to adam enoch seth abraham and others of his prophets who were in communion with him they were in a high sphere of civilization and true happiness true their lives were simpler their food and drink plainer but would bogod thatis were the same with bial if our lives |
