we were I 1 informed f rm M is about and when completed plated will cost about 3 in reply to our inquiry as to the cause slow progress we were informed that all these buildings were erected by the voluntary contributions of their people and as it is their prin principle C I 1 le not to have any debts upon buildings in dedicated to the lords service service they proceeded as these contributions warranted hero is another lesson our eastern christians might learn to advantage from these supposed western heathen who however have many points ahead of us tho the foundation of this building is 15 feet wide the wall at the surface being nine feet to bo be finished off at five feet at the top or square and which will be feet above the basement there are to be three towers at either end those in the center being feet it is bu built ailt of white granite ofa of a beautiful texture and which is obtained about sixteen miles from the city each block of 6 atone t 0 ne placed in the wall will costing this building will be used entirely for the administration of church ordinances din ances rite sand ceremonies such as baptisms for the dead which practice they follow as taught in the scriptures scriptures baptisms marriages and so fourth no church services are held herein besides these bulia enss they have places for ward meetings and prayer rayer meetings in in various various parts of the e city but which are of pretentious non appear appearance anee the chur church ch has also splendid temples in various parts odthe of the territory which is almost wholly owned by these latter day saints in the city there are the follow ing ng represented by commodious and good if not so pretentious buildings viz the episcopal p p A st marks cathedral erected in 1871 at a cost of about besides which a transept has has been added a ak a cost of and organ the presby terian is a plain red wood build building iii 9 said to have fine acoustic properties the methodists have a very fine brick building which cost about and is capable of seating about people the under part of the structure beim being used for educational I 1 purposes p ur P 0 8 es st marys cathedral koman it 1 catholic 1 bic is a fine substantial CC stolle building i 1 d i but the cost we could not ascertain then there is the walker opera house city hall which is also used as a meet bag sag place of the territorial legislature its hall being targe large and airy it atia is about forty feet in height and sixty feet square tho various civic offices arc are also here the walker ilo house ise hotel id is a ver very comfortable house fitted u up with all modern conveniences ang and excellent table their charges being from 83 to 84 per day tho the salt sa it lake theater built by the late president young is a large well appointed buil building din capable of ecat ing 1500 people of f other buildings we may notice tho tile gardo house or as it is called the amelia palace erected by brigham young president for his favorite wife but which is now nov occupied by his h u successor president taylor it is a very handsome building and surrounded by beautiful grounds amongst the many very handsome private residences abounding in all parta parts of tho the city and which are princely in all their surroundings may be mentioned those of the walker brothers roil mil Honn aires there ire are many others both private and public but space forbids noticing more than one other and to which reference was made in a previous previous s letter viz the co opera tive stoic this isa is a magnificent block and is ft a regular beehive bee hive of industry its frontage is over ft length ft and height fro froia 11 sidewalk 50 ft this is the very heart henrt of the great mercantile system which extends its ramifications etli the whole of the mormon mornion settlements settlement st its object beim being to furnish cheap commodities to its people eople as well as gentiles ivl who choose r t to buy there and to prevent their being cornered by the unscrupulous and avaricious gentilo gentile or Ife hebrew brew it is a IL grand success and credit AL its transact lions amounted last fist year to over and taking a all I 1 the other branch house houses at 0 ogdan den a and nd else where the annual turn over exceeds they have a boot and shoe shoo factory tannery overall over all factory and deal in almost every article of trade the capital emp employed loyed in all the stores combined amounts to th the clerks are young men and ladies belonging to the church of course we W were co courteously shown through the entire establishment establish meu by the superintendent mr eldridge who is an australian and thoroughly conversant with all the minutiae minu of this vast establishment every one here is 13 to do his or her duty verb laziness is no part of their creed which is pretty prett much if you dont ont work you yot cant can t eat benco all are active or energetic in their several spheres of labor here ag as in other places wo found the presiding officials were english and Scotch men mainly and all thoroughly wedded to the faith and business the population of the city is about of which it is esti mated profess the mormon faith the population of utah territory ig is about but the total mormon population including contiguous states and territories is about the form of government is territorial i i e the president of the united states a ap points the governor marshals marshals judges postoffice post office and other judicial officials and as the governor can veto any act which the local legis lature may pass it simply reduces the thing to a one man power and tho the assemblymen assemblyman Assembly men or legislators n never ever know what bill is to become law until it is actually signed some of the acts of the governor as shown us were most arbitrary and it is doubtful ifancy community in in any arky part of our provinces would submit so quietly as has been done here the acts of these officials aae nae guided apparently by ill will to their fellow citizens simply because they are mormons cormons Mor mons and not because the bills passed are either unwise unwise or unnecessary one instance will show the legislature were desirous of encouraging higher education and also to aid hospitals of which by the way we should say there are three they passed a bill granting to erect buildings for colleges etc ete but notwithstanding it was passed by an almost unanimous vote the governor vetoed it because itis it is alleged some of his myrmidons were not legislated into commissioners fur for the handling of ake money which waa was very properly refused as the people have seen pretty radical evidences of the way united states government agents handle trusts vide indian and similar matters hence tho college collego is still and the hospitals unsupported by state or territorial riar aid and yet many of the eastern newspapers accuse the mormons cormons of keeping dowil schools and education for fear of enlightening their people and thereby causing a stampede from the fold whereas facts are entirely the opposite as we were shown school houses in every ward which were 1 presided over by competent teace teacher ers if one ono may judge from the intelligence telli 0 gence ence of the Is shoo hooted ted young idea and which was not one whit behind eastern boya boys or girls of similar ki larynges larn Z but as this mormon faith is is a very much misunderstood one wo we wil will in our next try to set forth as its clearly as possible their doctrines practices and authorities as also the opinions of some of the wives with whom wo we had the pleasure u re of con conversing versi tig as to their side of the question tho city is governed by aldermen and councilors councillors Counci lors who are tire elected as elsewhere but ns as no control over the liquor licens licensing in 91 they cannot control it as they would do had they the power we were su surprised almost at the very orderly state of the city the streets in the evenings being much quieter than in your city of montreal Mou treal there ther e arc are rarely any brawls or street rows notwithstanding the large number of saloons and other places of demoralizing moral izing lug tendencies all of which dens are tire presided over by the gentiles the mormon mornion people having a great dislike to such placed places from froin tho the evil results which they throw in the way of their young people and heard B young jr state most emphatically inthis if this territory was admitted as a state and we were allowed to control these dens lens of sin gin shop shops and houses of ill fame we would make short work of the lot I 1 would give every seller or tv twenty four hour to leave the city an and get out of the state or string him up to the tile dwart nearest t lamp post these sentiment acre v arc genuine gentline and would satisfy tho inot rabid of teetotalers tee and strictest of le it id ia a fact however that as its a body hody the cormons mormons arc are bitterly op posed tu theo the o and nil till similar places vet without the power of cun trill ing or preventing them they have four policemen or bailif fi s to keep keel in order about of if a population which speaks well fur their general conduct the streets arc are well irell lighted nt night and aa as the sidewalks arc are solid earth the pedestrian has lifts no fear of mantraps man traps in in the way of unevenly laid bo boulders or broken brazen plank planks which too frequently dl grace and bedet eastern cities there are a it few more wore points of interest in and around this most interesting te of cities which will be continued in our next including the wonders of salt lake ac G H P |
