Show OUR CEMETERY the readers of tho the HERALD will remember that at the last cession session of tho the city council a petition was presented to that body asking the city government to drain the cem cems eatery grounds rounds a large portion of which were nvere full of water after tho the petition was read the city fathers at once took in the situation and acted promptly in the matter A committee was appointed every member of which seemed thorough ly interested and ind who acted with commendable zeal to remedy the evils complained of there arc are few places more sacred to tho the memory than those in which are placed the remains of our fathers ou our r kindred and other friends who were bound to our hearts buirts by many ties which linked them to us in earth life and hence it is that we love occasionally to visit their resting places after they have been torn from ou our r embrace by the rude hand of death we also take special delight as irving say says to weave the chaplet of flow ers and strew the beauties of nature about about the graves gram of buried loved ones it consoles the broken spirits and anti assuages grief in a measure irving further observes in his rural funerals the love which survives vives the tomb is one of the noblest attributes of our soul and that the natural effects of sorrow for the dead is to refine and elevate the mind doubtless it is for this cause that the tile people in all civilized nations take much pains and expend large sums of money moncy to make tho the homes of the nations underground beautiful and attractive and desirable places of resort to spend a it short time to commune with tho spirits and meditate on the virtues of those with whom they have spent the happiest hears in mortality and which they hope to resume when death shall be ived up in the victory of life for eTer evermore more at present our cemetery is but a rough rude resting place for the departed alt although bough the time was and for many years when it was much worse that it is now it lay jay open like any other common tho the graves were overrun over run and trampled down by the herds of cattle that had erstwhile pastured there and it was with much difficulty that the mother mo theror or the child find the tomb of the parent or the offspring circumstances cum stances have now changed our interment grounds are fenced in and arc are secured from intrusion by stock and measurably free from vandalism yandal ism the mortality has increased and necessitated an extension of land for grave lots the people generally aro are much better situated than they were wire formerly and many of them take a pride in expending a portion of their means to decorato decorate the tombs of the departed and to erect tablets or shafts to perpetuate their memories so that they being dead yet speak tho the members of the city government have responded promptly and cheerfully to the petition to t 0 mako the new and some of the old grounds dry and fitting places in which to deposit the remains of the departed citizens of this and adjacent towns to ans in weber county and ve ive believe wo voice the sentiments of the whole community when we say that in our opinion the time has arrived when tho the cit city y fathers can spend a portion of the city rv revenue canue to good advantage by continuing in the good work they have begun t in in improving the cemetery grounds by clea clearing rint off the sage brush grease greime wood rabbit brush etc in laying out walks planting shade trees tres and making tho the cemetery look as though it were owned by a civilized and progressive people in thia this desirable work they will have the hearty concurrence of and be fully sustained by every property owner and aud taxpayer in tho the corporate limits of this city one oi of the most beautiful and touching sights wo we over witnessed was that of a young mother moth plant ing flowers on the grave of her child which had been snatched from her arms in its infancy wo we would more frequently witness such acts of devotion in our cemetery if water w fsr rw were provided to fructify plants flowers and trees when planted on or around the graves of the dead in in i ogden we further believe that if there bo be not sufficient funds in the city treasury for this purpose many of the citizens of ogden would willingly b contribute liberally forthe for the accomplishment of so im desirable i an object we hope to learn at no distant day that steps have hav been olleen taken to this end yes adorn beautify and make bright and cheerful the resting places of
