Show fiust at COURT slay 1 U GRAD jur to his honor judge 11 hi 1 h eme aon son the grand ilir jury y of the may term terin of the first judicial district district court having visited the city and county jails at ogden city respectfully submit the following report viz L pon poll arriving nt at the city jail we were first show a ahr through ough the cells the upper floor the majority of these we found in ili an extremely filthy condition one in in particular had bal at least a of refuge refuse bread rotten meat and potatoes human excrement and everything every thing foul and filthy all scraped up I 1 in hi ori one pile at alf alfe corner of edthe the cell and it is N the opinion odthe of the jury that this accumulation of filth had been allowed lo 10 remain in present position for more than one week at least two tether cells on the floor djoa bad a condit condition aa tile above and were the cells ocen occupied pied by the prisoners all the un mccu occupied 1 jed cells were in a tolerably fair condition yet the they too abo 1 ed a signs upon the tile filth ib is allowed to accumulate whenever cells alls are ire occur omu pied by prisoners the cells on oil the upper floor ari ara very and be lie lined i with ith strong sheet iron the cells on the lower bloor altho although itah not as clean as they be be still we think they will wil 1 compare favorably with other jails jai 1 s in iti the country all ane tit e cells both lower and upper need whitewashing and slid we would especially recommend that the proper authorities bo be compelled to proceed at once and thoroughly lily re renovate and whitewash these calls wo we then visited the county J jail a il and found it sadly adly neglected throughout throng alve wc jail is is not occupied or at all for the confinement of prisoners boners at the present art time still there is no excuse for theja alic amount mount wi in the t to 0 remail there th elle a its in ili our opinion it is detrimental to the tile health of cafall all those who occupy the floors above W V M foreman |
