Show CITY I 1 COUNCIL MINUTES the city council met pursuant to adjournment in the new nei city building on F friday july at 6 pm alderman stratford presiding after the reading of the minutes of the last meeting which were accepted the council proceeded to the consideration of PETITIONS A petition of P P F schaefer Sch sefer in in behalf of the silver chord orches tra asking for the grant of the uso use of the lester park square pavilion pavilions for the ot july was on motion of alderman tanner fanner referred to the committee on public grounds with authority to act A petition of it M bu burch reb wm stimpson J it clark L J herrick and ten others asking the council to locate and open a street commencing at the end of what is known as aLane thence south along the east side of the U P railroad to the south boun boundary dary odthe of the co corporate apor ate limits to intersect with the old oil county road was referred to the committee on streets R W holroyd and about thirty others remonstrated to the council against t the passage of an ordinance agam ils licensing ir ens 3 9 job wagons as contemplated for the reason that it will create a monopoly among those licensed and materially affect the petitioner onera interest referred to the committee on licenses E A mcdaniels McDani eIs presented a P petition for charting the street streets a and n numbering the houses of the city which was referred to a special committee appo appointed inam by the chairman viz alderman tanner fanner and coun cifors cifors boyle and taylor the following petition was pre dented to the which we have mostly invested in suitable auit able buil buildings dingi and utensils to carry on the manufacture of lager beer a healthy ind and nourishing beverage and recommended by the medical faculty all over the world as a health preserving and nou nourishing ribbing article and tending to discourage the course of ante ance more than all tho the sumptuary laws eer ever enacted which is is our industry andas and ask kyou vou re respectfully to restore ake the old boer beer license at tho tile former rate it at W 50 per quarter in in order to enable us to brine bring our product before tho the public we are now endangered by b the combined capital tf cf eastern brewers br eners who w ho have hav e millions of dollars invested and aad millions at their command to bo be entirely annihilated aa as with their large factories it is is impossible for us to compete with w ith them the brewing of lager beer is in its infancy in ogden city and unless encouraged by a low license system it will have to give way entirely before the great monopolies of the east we further furt lier represent to your honorable body that our disbursements for labor ice etc is is not less than 2 per annum which is all left with the laboring classes of ogden city the item of ice alone abou amou amounting tin topnot less than 2500 all of n which we can substantiate by affidavits we constantly employ an array army of mechanics chanice cs such as blacksmiths dinners tin ners carpenters carpenters brick and stone masons and all such artisans as are needed to breweries in good repair we pay more revenue to the city W water ater works company than any other institution in the city since the new license system lias has gono gone into effect two houses for the carry tarrying ingon on of the retail trade are ly iv ing idle our fixtures in which we have thousands of dollars invested are worthless to thour our groat great injury oni only b by a 2 low license system A for beer all ri t eliat 1 t property can be made valuable again further futher we wish to brine bring to your notice that all legislative bodies throughout the united states make a distinction between a beer and w bisky license as you could not have a fi failed led to notice in the late enactments odthe of alie ohio and illinois legislatures in conclusion gentlemen we ask your honorable boak to give this pe your earliest attention and look at our case in a business point ot of view and not from the prohibition move ment but to discourage drunkenness and protect homo home manufacture as against importation and F W P D alf and about others Alf alderman trman horrocks moved that the brewers present 11 mccarty and john J fry be allowed ten minutes each to prefer arguments of their petition alderman tanner moved an am amendment that they be granted an unlimited length of time which was carried by five fire to three whereupon the brewers named addressed the council bringing forth additional arguments to their petition the petition was then referred to the committee on licensee es nEron u Ts I 1 tho the committee on oil licenses Licens ca reported PO arted on tho the petition of the brewers in which they asked for the privilege of selling the beer of their own W manufacture anu facture oil their own premises r recommending that it be not granted report accepted and recommend rec recommendation ommen dation adopted after some discussion in which council ore ors and boyle suggested teI that the brewen bo be granted the privilege of retailing their own privilege beer oa on their preau premi ece aest as some sort of encourage encouragement meat to their manufactures while alderman tanner argued in favor of the con aum er the tile 1 beer 0 eer drinking portion of the community who he said would patronize tho the imported beer even at the greatly increased price over the home beer the committee on municipal laws asked for further time for tho the consideration ot the matter of license for job wagons which was granted the committee on claims e reported having examined a it number of bills and made recommendations in connection therewith which were adopted by the council among them thein was a it bill of 2405 by IV G child for lamps etc which it was resolved not to pay in this form but to make a special appropriation therefore the lamps lamps etc to go the fire brigade with regard to the bill of julia ferge son for boarding and taking care of the committee recommended it paid which alderman miller opposed The recommendation was accepted and the bill ordered paid the tile committee on water supply reported on the petition of greenwell and others for additional hydrants recommend recommending in I 1 it b be e granted on condition that t the e C city it and the recommending it be not granted to which tho council agreed tile committee on streets reported that they were now repairing main street between third and fourth filling up bad holes also on seventh and recommendation adopted the committee on public works was granted further time the die committee on public grounds recommended mcconi mended several applications for city lots which were granted the organization niza tion of a wook hook and ladder company the matter was referred to the committe Com milte on fire department and that committe empowered ere d to meet with the fire brigade for the purpose of organizing orga organizing a hook and ladder compa company and to report to the council for approval councilor horrocks directed the councils attention to the fact that a certain party iu in town was owing i the city on a note and suggested that somebody bo be appointed to wait on the tile debtor and invite him to settle the committee on claims was instructed to attend to tho the matter on representation of councilor boyle regarding Dg the bad condition of the sidewalk on main street just south of boyle co s furniture furni tuie establishment the matter was referred to the petitioner represented the case of druggists selling liquor and asked for a special license to sell liquor by measure or bottle at a nominal or hying liying rate not to be drunk on the tile premises
