Show nE resolutions sOLUTIONS OP or RESPECT the following preambles aud and resolutions presented to and adopted by he the city council of salt lake city at its session of tuesday march fth 1884 explain themselves and will be indorsed endorsed indor sed by all lovers of justice and equal rights under the constitution WHEREAS by the passage alsage bythe by the congress of the united states 0 of the edmund edmunds law which we believe to be unconstitutional an am we know it to be subversive of the peoples libei ties a commission endowed with extraordinary powers has his been put in charge of all election proceedings in the territory of utah and stud Wil gREAS said commission bagwe has wo believe in excess of the powers granted it by said law issued orders restrictive and arbitrary bt by which citizens exempted under t the h a law aw itself are denied the rights of citizenship viz to vote and hold bold office and a judicial decision upon the th constitutional questions involved in eaid said law and orders order of the commission created by it many citizens of the united states in the territory of utah have voluntarily refrained from asserting their rights at the polls and in the nominating conventions conven tiona of the people and among these aro are capre tentative senta tive men whom the people of salt lake like city have for many years been pleased to honor with the principal offices of the municipality municipality and st still desire to do BO so there therefore ere be it resolved by the mayor and city council of bait salt lake city elect ed february 11 1884 that we are fully cognizant of the political situation in utah which curtails the people thereof and of salt lake city especially i X in n the exercise of the Cons titus titu al dional 11 right to make a free selection from the midst odthe of the men of th their air choice to be their official ai as tives resolved td that we are conscious that this law and the rulings of the commission threaten and assail the liber ties of all citizens in the territory of utah that we contemplate the natural consequences thereof ther eor with apprehension and slid protest against them revived resolved that in assuming the offices made vacant by worthy representative whose integrity lias line in lone louir years been tried and and proven prove we do so regretting the expediency ency that makes us their sors resolved that we approve their official conduct during the tile period they have been before the public and esteem them men of the hibbeat bi debt character qualified in every way duties odthe of the offices they nos no aca and made ineligible to cont continue dinue in in eaid said offices only by liy the unjust and arbitrary action of powers that do net not appreciate nor understand the enormity in of the attack made upon them and V d upon the civil liberties of the people besotted that these resolutions be respectfully inscribed to the honorable ex mayor william jennings and the retiring council and members ol 01 the city government that they be spread upon the minutes and be ordered printed As a passage in our editorial on an Ase assessor enor quoting the rem remarks from the alia california regarding the irregularity of taxation in the city of san francisco has been misunderstood by some notwithstanding it tho the plain quotation marks before and after the misinterpreted interpreted mit sentence otence Be we wish to emphasize the fact that the remark had not the least allusion to the tile assessors of ogden city or weber county everybody knows that both of these officials aro are exercising the prerogatives of their delicate onerous and responsible duties a with strict impartiality and irreproachable i integrity tempering their disagree able functions with a wise discretion a which has made them as popular as respected THE orion era arizona Arix ona hopes soon to hear of the reappointment of chief justice french as it still thinks he is a man who loves love justice and right and his reappointment will give almost universal satisfaction OURY is doing everything in m his power to have the salaries of the arizona territorial legislators Legis latora iu increased creased from 4 to 88 68 per day |
