the tile scene of yesterdays ead sad accident in ogden canyon which resulted in the death of one man the injury of two and the destruction of a large amount of valuable property As is usual in these cases caw it id is impossible to toll tell what CAUSE EXPLOSION was for as a general thing if the fault lies at tho the door of any one man that one is usual usually ly so remarkably dead lead as to be unable to give any account of what occurred and to bo be perfectly factly indifferent to blame I 1 he flir has got his final discharge and cares little about the cens censure sure or praise of the world put in the present case the accident is inexplicable p E ica ble every ever y precaution had been taken to guard against any such catastrophe as took place yesterday 1 A competent superintend ent and careful men all things so arranged as to reduce the proba bailit lili of possibility of anything ot of the kind kind to a minimum all this puts the affair in the position of those matters before and the music of the tile waters was as sweet yet the click clack of the tile mill was silent and in place the active business look of the ec ethere waa was RUIN AND destruction tile thc shapo some auxilia auxiliary Ly machinery while in the wing are two rooms used for storing and grinding nitrate of potassa po tessa and charcoal in ili the long part or main portion odthe of the building attending to the stamping machinery was ONE OF THE WORKMEN davis and outside of the mill were two carpenters named geo W potter and george Lawson awson who were bu ilung a it trestle work for supporting a wheelbarrow way along which the various materials ria s for the i manufacture nanu facture of the powder were to be brought everything was going on in the usual way and the workmen were kursu i ing ig their vocations with no apprehension of danger when suddenly there came a report and flash and in a moment the clamp r mill was WRAPPED IN after the drat fint s shock bock of surp surprise riso was over mr J 11 knauss the G general agent of the company accompanied by mr holt the superintend superintendent ten d rushed to tho tile scene of the accident and aided bk by the men succeeded in arresting t the c progress edg of the flames and preventing we venting serious damage to tho the aume flamo and turbine wheel as well as removing tho the danger to the other buildings when the affair was over and tho tile excitement t abated it was foun d that one of tho carpenters had been killed while tile other george law lawson son waa was quite badly injured and davis who was working in i in li the mill had find been blo blown wn tafou through gh the door to quite a distance but had escaped with a few bruises br tho vie building stamps and such bach materials aseere in the place were arf TOTALLY DESTROYED and the loss is estimated to be between and the reporter interviewed several parties p arties at johnsons this looming morning and elicited the following facts MRS jonnson JOHNSON 1 I was sitting by the door with mr johnson and a young lady about half past four yesterday afternoon when the first thing I 1 knew we heard an art explosion like tho the sound of a cannon and then saw smoke and flames coming from fron the powder works and some of the boys came brunni runni running i ng up and c called a 11 ed out that the works had blown up u 1 it was vas not an instant between the sound of the explosion and the fire davis was blown out of the door and lawson was injured geor george ge potter was struck ou on the neck and head with splinters and must mut have been killed instantly besides being badly burned GEORGE LAWSON 1 I was working on oil the trestle and eliat is all I 1 know Ic I 1 cant anttell tell what hit me or hurt me and did lid not know anything until I 1 found myself here this morning WM M X CROWLEY 1 I was working wol kin at the works and tile first ta thing I 1 knew was an explosion and I 1 s saw w the end of the stamp mill going out the next moment the tile whole building was one sheet of flames and then we went to work to savo save the other buildings coroner mark hall went out to the works as soon as possible and after summoning and im paneling the following jurors C L briix bringham wm win ill crowley and mark mar hall 1111 jr proceeded to HOLD AN INQUEST on 01 viewing the th body it was found to be terribly burned and on the right side of the head bead and neck were two large splinters one penetrating the brain and the other severing the jugular i lar vein and carotid c artery ru walter lter davis was the only witness examined and testified as follows was working at tho the stamp mill the deceased aco wr W potter was vr working near the mill an explosion occurred at pm the deceased was next seen lying on the ground with i TWO STICKS IN 1119 HEAD andson and so near ear the building that he could not be reached until the fire was extinguished at which time lie was completely roasted the cause of the accident F is unknown and no blame is attached to anyone the jurors repaired to the dead mans boarding place and there found his valise containing one suit of clothes three shirts a revolver an albu album in and several stun small I 1 trinkets THE VERDICT VA N ZILK july G 6 1683 1883 we the under undersigner signed jurors upon oath do say that george W potter caine to his death from the explosion of tho stam stamp p mill of the utah pow powder der company in ogden canyon weber county utah that the explosion was accidental find no one is to blame C I 1 B HINGHAM S signed 31 MARK R X HALL jr WILLIAM CROWLEY coroner hall has the body of the deceased in charge and says that it is a dreadful sight eight being horribly contorted and absolutely ROASTED he ile lias has also some rome letters to Potter forn om his father Wil william liall 1 potter of indian springs mcdonald 1 county mo inlo and one letter written by him to his father ill in j which ho lie speaks orsome of some relatives relative presumably a sister anda and a brother inlaw in law having left ogden for montana the father will be telegraphed and in tho tile mean time coroner roner hall will take charge of the remains and if advisable will inter them here A MOST SAD BAD occurrence this is indeed ono one which we trust it will wil 1 not be bebur our duty to reagain I 1 cord there can be no I 1 possible blame attached to any one I 1 of the proprietors or employees and I 1 it can call only be regarded one of j those inexplicable accidents that sometimes will take place in spite of every precaution |
