Show THE PRESIDENT AND THE commission the tile good natured old man who undertook the hopeless task of trying to please everybody pleased no body but offended all and it is said he at last lost his balaam bal besides and when he concluded that ho he would please himself he was wis till grumbled at president Art liura message is is conservative and satisfactory te to most common sense men of the nation but of course the radically rabid few are disappointed dis heartened and disgusted r for or them the message is too tame they fondly hoped and fully expected that the message would contain con tarin becom ions to congress to pass more mad measures against the people of utah to further scrip them thern of f the moiety of liberty that remains to them but the president thinks it is not probable and not desirable that auy additional legislation in this regard remard should be passed until the effects of the present measure measures have been fully tested lie ile thinks that utah matters can be manipulated without resorting to the radical means clamored for by the few inis miserable erable malcontents nearly all d the ie non mormon clo elc ment that we have heard speak on this subject here indorse the views of president arthur ou on utah affairs they consider there has been legislation enough and more than is is good for the peace of the country being disappointed and chagrined at sit the presidents crits message the liberal element hoped to glean some few crumbs of comfort from the report of the co commission maimon era perhaps they did drowning men catch at straws but they drown nevertheless the commissioners have reported their report was published in in thursday evenings iesue ef of the HERALD those these gentlemen appear to be as satisfied with their labors labore here as the president is with them how do the liberals feel about it are they happy wo think not the report contains little if anything more inspiring for them than did I the message f what do these those gentlemen recommend me nd congress to do very little Ec scarcely arcely anything that is new and nothing that is very vicious they say the law conferring on women the right of b suffrage in utah hi u an obstruction to the speedy solution of the tile vexed question in thie this they differ from those gentiles who clamored so loudly for the passage odthe of the law conferring the right of female suffrage they thought it would be just the thing to of feet the speedy solution of the t vexed question the commissioners L say tay it is competent for congress to repeal or annul thia this law 11 but they do not advise congress to do it for wo we do net not believe they wish Congress to repeal it at any rate they do not urge it the I loyal OY al liberal clement element t tried ried to induce the commission to urge the tile national legislature to deal still more rigorously with the mor mons than they have been dealt with heretofore have they succeeded hear what those gentlemen I say Oar attention irm been called to the propriety of ofir recommending congressional gressi onal legislation of a rad radical ival character but we are not inclined to advise uch such measures unless upon further observation and experience the wisdom and necessity of auch such legislation shall be demonstrated they understand that the law under which they are acting is aimed at the extirpation of polygamy and they arc are willing to labor to this end ed t te fulfil fulfill the intention of the law but they arc of tho the opinion that this object can be accomplished without resorting to measures destructive of local self govern ment and without punishing the innocent and the guilty alike with political ostracism they will not advise that kind of legislation it is true that the commission recommend the enactment of a marriage law for utah requiring that all marriage marriages shall be solemnized in certain places and by such persons and registered in such public office offices as to make the proof of the mar ringe morally certain that tho the law bs be fashioned after the marriage acts of most of the states now we de do not think the marriages ria cs in utah can be made any more certain morally roe rally or otherwise othe than they are at present presents by auy any number of legislative enactments besides the marriage laws in tho the states arc are to so numerous and so widely in their character that congress would scarcely know which oue to select as a model for ns vs hence we think this recommendation will meet with but little consideration at present A i all in ail all the message and tho the report are fully as temperate as wo expected them to be reason appears at least for the present to have prevailed pre Tailed over the wild tempest of passion which erstwhile agitated I th the nation from center to circumference cum curn ference on the utah question and men in high station stations begin to think mere more calmly and seriously as to what may be the results of further rash acts against an innocent inoffensive ive people wo we sincerely hope th espirit of wisdom may p preside rem in the councils coun goun sils of those who conduct theau airs orthis of this great nation tion that they may bo influenced by a desire to deal out evenhanded even handed banded justice to all regardless of their creed in politics or religion |
