in all the principal discussions csc that occurred in that L legislature tu re and in several instances I found nd myself contesting every inch of the ground in opposition to men in high authority in in tho the mormon church Chur cli so far from bein being censured for my independence I ne believe i e tt they approbated probated ap ap pp yb at ed my T 11 r liberal party to defeat woman go suffrage is utterly devoid of honest principle no substantial or adequate reason teason ever has been or can be given riven why female suffrage should not exist amon among a free and enlightened people I accord to every man the right to his political opinion As for my part I political roli have tave over been een a free and ant man and I intend to remain free and independent no man has approached pro ached me for the purpose of using undue influence to swerve me from my honest convictions I cannot aasni er for other men there may be those whom undue influence have swerved from honest convictions and I inherited from my ancestors liberty which I swear by my right hand will try to maintain and transmit unsullied to prosperity I heartily endorse tho the remarks of my friend kir mr thurman and will give voice to ray my experience experienc a of forty years among this people and institutions which I love above all others I have known nearly all the prominent mormons cormons Mor mons for more than a quarter ot a century and e can an say in all that timo time I have not been in any way ay iy coerced or unduly influenced in in any matter either tern temporal spiritual itu or political by any legislature liture of utah territory for the last fourteen years ears and upon the floor of that kou house have exercised all the rights and privileges due to a member of that body unquestioned and in the contest for a seat of the liberal member from thoele tooele co in 1874 I took occasion in opposition to the hon ifon john taylor then a member of the house in favor of seating the liberal candidate and by vote he was to tako take bis his seat a government official was sent for to administer the oath but lie could not be found I was told toll he was off on a drunk the committee on elections brought in their raper report soon after that be he was not entitled to the foat I refer to this circumstance circum tance to show the falsity of r the charge of dictation front from our le leading ad men BO so often brought by the liberal party of utah I am a liberal I think in its fullest meaning and take broad views desiring tha that all men everywhere shall act upon their convictions utah while there have been many sentiments expressed by the former speakers yet there remain some that I will attempt lo 10 give although endorsing all that lias has been said fully I now occupy a post position giop aa as a speaker unsought for and it is is certainly an unenviable position I belong to the liberal party in the broadest sense there is a faction that professes to be a liberal party bat but the name I think is a it misnomer my sentiments are that while wo we of the dominant party are struggling to hold preeminence pre eminence and the other aids side is Bt st rivin with the came same tenacity to pain gain preeminence pre eminence in utah whenever that party become the majority fairly and honestly then I am willing to submit and not till then con contest t est fbi for
