of OAKLAND which is readied reached by ferryboat ferry boat and railroad trains tho tile faro fare is only fifteen cents tills this town is not so much for its commercial importance but as a i place of the roost most princely resi dej dencks ices which arc are numerous and many of them are the scata seats of the merchant princes and bankers whose business busi nesa establishments arc are on oil tho the opposite op p osite side of the bay T the he gardens of these residences arc are laid out ut in styles which combine great elegance and mid neatness beautiful lawns arl anve s plats trees water and command a magnificent view over the bay the corner stone of the agricultural college called the south hall was laid in august 1872 with public ceremonies that of the korth north hall hal I date the bacon art and library building and the college of mining and mechanics arts the ille first of these is named in honor lionor of mr henry A bacon who presented the university with an excellent collection of paintings sculpture and miscellaneous works of arta library of several thousand volumes and L A beai to erect a suitable buil building dim to contain the treasures pr provided ovidea tho and a lhost lost of other friends of the institution in scientific works it can i only be said to be measurably complete e in ill consequence of the tile periodicals which are yearly increasing it a physicist and his associates are all skilful and accomplished in their several departments tile colleges have already done a good work and have still before them a career of usefulness as the course
