| Show DEADLY WAYS OF DRESSING C corsuti Cor arx iotti coats hoots nul it gloves blondon joa A lecture on the present style of dress dress was delivered byar by mr frederick treves at kensington on saturday under tho the auspices of the national health society the lee lecturer observed that the primary objects of clothing to cover t tho ie body and nd maintain it at an equable terna tema ne have little or no concern in some of the dresses of the period in the low evening dress the arms ni neck ck and up upper er part of the chest and back arcaro are bare while about the lower extremities is accumulated a mass ass of raiment that would garb a dozen children in the ordinary dress of women little regard is had bad for maintaining an equable temperature of the body the cove covering rill of the upper part of tb the chest above the line of the corset is very thin perhaps that of the dress only the region of the corset is reasonably covered while about the hips many layers of clothing are massed thus the body may be divided geographically into a frigid P a temperate and a torrid zone As regards tight lacing if the most beautiful female outline is that of a young normal well developed woman then a narrow waist is is bide hideous ous A miniature waist is a deformity under ai any y circum circumstances and few deformities are pleas pleasing ng no normal woman 13 ia although its cons conspicuousness depends somewhat on oil development Gh children ildren have normally no waist and a tight laced child is a gross and pitiable deformity the normal waist has a circumference of about twenty eight or twenty nine inches I 11 elegant waist waist should be twenty inches the waist measurement of dressmakers lay figures now liow varies from twenty one to twenty five inches those who wish to improve their figures by stays have bave before them the conception of a twenty inch inell waist venus to the outline of this hourglass hour glass shaped f goddess addess they aspire the norma normal waist is quite oval the fashionable waist quite round women with miniature waists who maintain that such waists are natural to them and are independent of art must have been born deformed no person enters this world with a ready made fashionable waist As regards lic alth the tapering wai stis effected mainly by a compression pr of the five lower ribs these ribs rib S being ng more movable than all the rest reit there is a popular delusion to the effect that there is plenty of empty space inside the body and into this space the displaced organs are pushed in tight lacing tight lacing means a depression not of sl skin slin in muscle and bone but of liver stomach and lungs even a slight amount of constriction affects these organs and stays that are by no means tight lessen the capacity of the chest for air post mortems on tight lacera lacers show the liver deeply in indented anted with the ribs and more seriously displaced the stomach is also commonly affected as too are the lungs the diseases that co commonly pi m only re rc suit sult are arc dyspepsia liver derange ments disturbances of nutrition etc tight lacing more or less useless the diaphragm or principal muscle of rc respiration the breathing powers of the nar raw are always seriously impaired and hence follows blythe bly tho langor the inability for exertion the tendency to faint etc the circulation moreover is interfered with and certain cases of death from apoplexy in young women who have tight laced stays injuriously affect the muscles of the back these muscles become wasted because their function that of supporting the spine is absorbed by the corset and they exhibit the tile usual changes of muscles that have been long disused thus t the lie back is actually weakened by the use of stays and those women who maintain that they can not do without the support of stays make use of the argument of the opium eater cater who after having by indulgence developed a craving for the drug asserts that ho he cannot do without it under no circumstances do young girls require stays and bulk of young women also the same remark applies A modified corset composed merely of still material and devoid of all bands and whalebone etc may bo be used by those who incline to stoutness or whose bust is prominent and by women who have been mot mothers liers such a corset or bodice bodic a would merely give that slight amount of support required for comfort and appearance the lecturer next referred to shoes and boots and denounced pointed tees and high heels he thought that the amount of petticoats was often excessive these garments have for their r tal primary mary object the protection of the lower ower extremities but if additional warmth is required for these parts surely the use of an extra petticoat or so is not the most sensible way of supplying it not only do petticoats add greatly to the weight of dress to be carried but they throw a it very injurious burden on the hips around they arc are attached several petticoats suspended layer by layer about the waist cannot have other than injurious effect upon health and the evil is especially obnoxious to young girls in m whom the hips are narrower and in whom tho the garments can r not bo be properly supported without a considerable consider ables amount of constriction of the waist if these garments roust must bo be worn let lot them bo be attached to a bodice or let them be bus suspended nd from the shoulders bya by a modified ose afi d form of brace A far more sensible way of clothing the lower extremities cities is provided by the so called combination garment which is a must most valuable addition to reasonable and healthy dress a fabulous number of buttons that cover nearly the entire arm and with clo closeness selim of fit and with impermeability of structure most seriously interfere with the action of the skin of the tile u upper per extremities there was need op of a dress both sensible and pretty and the evolution of such a dress would appear tobe to be at present somewhat hindered by tho the action of these very persons who oppose fashionable costume the Tho greek Greck dress somewhat recently introduced is not only extremely graceful but it is also healthy and and may with some little ingenuity be adapted to all the circumstances of everyday every day life |
