exercises their rendition was an evidence to him that the young men are preparing themselves for the great labors before them it is true we arc are spoken evil of by the world but all is peace and gp will in zion we have long since learned to pray for our enemies mies q wo we have no enmity toward our fellowmen fel wo we aro sorrowful when wesee we see their wickedness our children are lovers of liberty and have learned to worship god as their conscience dictates they ley come from too noble lineage to ever be slaves the world says much against our marital relations but by bv the fruits ofa of a tree we shall know it if our children are as good and pure and love liberty as well as others ohp then our marriaga marriage system iscer is certainly not at fault that this is so is evident from our young men who have been gent sent to school in the east who are brighter and many times more intellectual than their school companions co born in tho tile world he often thought of this when he lie remembered his companion elder F L young who died upon the sea laying his body don down leaving a record for all till to pattern after he ile was a ft eon son of parents who had entered into the eternal marriage covenant the youth of our people should understand der stand the importance of this eternal marriage and that if they the y go to justices of the peace or basli bishops aps ops and are married it i is but for time and is not the marriage that existed in the beginning adam and eve eye were married for eternity and it is is clearly shown in the tile Scrip scriptures turee comparing the tile first and second chapters of genesis ho he thought it very y clear that adam perfectly understood der stood the nature of the sacrifice when ho he partook of what is called the tile forbidden fruit he ile was united by an eternal marriage covenant with eve and fell as it is said in the book of mormon that man might be proving him to have been faithful to the covenant that had bad been given him to cleaye cleave unto his wife and multiply and replenish the earth which is the ob object act oscor of correct marriage it therefore becomes very im important to the tile young youil when chiosi choosing a C companion om panion to get got one that tile they au can love and honor through eternity for there is no separation even as there was none in the beginning tho the world has no such marriage with all of science seine in in the century the lack of moral mora I improvement ment is deplorable the tile statistics prove it their orphan asylums and houses of refuge show that their system is one of death it is shown that 90 00 per cent in one of these places where children of unfortunates up are received die before they are one year old this from among christians who raie their voices in horror at the morality of utah they may call this pleasing and acceptable but we know now it is a stink in the nostrils of an offended god they talk ortho of tho robed harlot of utah do they need to look so far they need not as the statistics of alie people show in chicago every fifth woman is said to violate the moral law some will say do not talk of this it is too delicate a subject which is the worst to talk of it or practice it the marriage marriage system of the world leads to deann and destruction the gospel to life and eleya elevation tion we have e proven that we IOTO lovo our country by responding to every call if this does not prove it I dont know how bow we can when our idaho governor says I that he lie has seen tho the stare stars and stripes I dragged in the mud through the e of salt lake city he I to tho the world tb that tbt t which he knows to be false As a nation ours urs ihnot is not moral and when this country enters the field as a moral reformer it mimes its vocation to tho the young he would say practice your religion well what about the law of 1862 1802 we have gone to the highest tribunal and from that we appeal to the court of heaven there in the city where the gates bear tho tile names odthe of the twelve song sons of jacob and his big four wives we cewill will get et a v decision that will be in accordance bance wit ath h the lives of great and good prophets and saints who practice tho the marriage system that we do in the mean time ime we will submit to the law of our country ifa if a man breaks this law ho lie is is amenable to its punishments whatever those are aut but we do not wish wiell to bo be taken for offenders offend as a community let it b be c proven again against st each individual that he may bs be punished as tho the unjust law provides with the blessings of god upon all the speaker dosed closed his re remarks marki choir sang and benediction waa was pronounced by elder IV farr adjourned till WOODRUFF nurr desired to make a few remarks with regard to elder jos A west the president ent of the Y 11 11 I A of the weber slake take 15 who six months ago had been compelled compell edby by circumstances to tender his resignation it had not then been considered opportune to accept it but it was now accepted by unanimous consent of the congregation pres woodruff here gave it as his conviction that elder west has magnified his calling and hoped that his successor W d do like likewise TRES D n PEERY stated the pleasure ho he realized at seeing so many of the brethren and sisters in the congregation he also expressed his satisfaction at the young breth rens excellent remarks in the forenoon fore noan he lie was proud to state that these young men were not those who could be bc found in saloons around billiard tables at horse races at pigeon matches or other similar resorts chest were the young toting men who would be powerful in limping to roll on the great and mighty work of the gospel weber stake is second to none in the land of zion as to young men of integrity and faith pres peery closed by recommending to the con gre gation the name of elder E 11 iderson anderson as president odthe of the Y 11 M I A of weber stake elder anderson was unanimously sustained stained Bu in this calling ELDER ilden JUNIUS P r WELLS stated the pleasure with which he had listened to the forenoons fore for exercises and his satisfaction at the great success of the work of mutual improvement in the weber stake of zion speaking of the reports recording the tile progress made by the associations L elder ider wells stated that no stake ever was more prompt in responding to the call of the central authorities au of the Y M ina M I A he ho had found that great interest had bad been evinced in the cause of mutual improvement iu in a great measure to the good government of tho the oll cers cera installed without efficient management by the officers there can no improve ment be made the work of mutual improvement is one of incalculable importance the youth of zion arc are ready to receive any truth that is advanced by the servants of the living god goa they arc are ready to adopt and carry out any instructions of the priesthood the mission to introduce the principles ol 01 the tho gospel of the lord to the young and rising generation is as great as any ever established it is to show them the grandest object of life to servo serve the lord and do his will securing to themselves a testimony monT of the truth of the latter day work A few years year a ago some of the old brethren would would look around at the young b and find them breaking the laws taws of the lard in many ways indifferent to the great princia principles bafs I es of the gospel but today to day on the contrary tile elder brethren aftel that god has reserved those of the sons of zion who will aid in bear ica off his kingdom kingdom of all the missions to which elder wells had been appointed that among the youth of zion has been the most delightful and satisfactory to him it is a source of pleasure to our heavenly father to see iee so many of pistons his sons and daughters assembled and interested in the great work of f salvation the prevailing thought of the youth of zion is to serve the dic lord obey hia his commandments this is the truth however much vile slanderers slander ers may misrepresent present them before the world as tired of the ignominy heaped udom their fathers the sons of israel when they go out into the world meet so much iniquity sin and corruption that they cry out in dl disgust kaust give us zion and they realize the beauty and purity of tho the gospel under whose beni benign n and chaste influences they thet have 91 been een bornand barn and bred elder wells then referred to tho the self styled regenerators of utah those raen men and women wh who come in from the fhe east to reform the latter day baines and in scathing words exposed the wickedness of afe the very places from which these would bo be reformers reform erg hail bail there arc are no children in utah who cannot aint point proudly to their fathers mot mothers t aers and homes while there arc are thousands in the outside world who have neither parents nor homes in dosing closing 1110 elder wells warmly indorsed endorsed ali the nomination andt appointment of elder E H anderson Ander sou and prayed for the lords blessings upon him PRESIDENT IDENT JOS F r followed with en all impressive ad or he ile ex expressed his pleasure at tho the excellent remarks remark s made before also at tho the selection of a successor to elder jos A west as president of the they Y II 11 M I L A of the weber stake president smith hero here explained the circumstances which had bad compelled elder west to res resign if his position as president of the Y M M I A and expressed his high regard and sincere friendship for him bin wishing him the best success for the mission to europe on which aih he be will shortly start prest smith hoped and trusted that the spirit that had attended elder west would attend his successor elder anderson the speaker was in favor of rotation of men in office so that those of ability would havo have an opportunity to exercise and develop it preat smith was pleased with the excellent showing maddt by this and ho he was satisfied that a i vast amount of good was being done by tho the associations he ile pointed out how the young oung speakers of tho forenoon had had searched for truth in the scriptures and had bad found it by their diligent efforts the speaker here also emphasized the necessity of dili diligence ence perseverance and application in order to attain proficiency in in any principle we have got to seek industriously for knowledge if we desire knowledge and if it wo we persist and find persevere in the pursuit of it we shall obtain it by no ether w way the work of the lord lor as in these last days is steadily increasing in importance and magnitude it never has gone backward but has constantly bantly advanced and progressed the speaker had carefully studied the history of the church and found that the purposes w of the lord had always been accomplished although there may be apparent failures this the speaker illustrated and proved with instances showing that at times when tho the lord had a certain specific pup purpose pose the people were not prepared for the t of his designs the people have not ot decreased in ill knowledge or blessings although wo we have not advanced as rapidly as we vie mi might bt have done we still have progressed the lord will give his people one more opportunity to redeem his kin kingdom today to day there is greater faith among the tile people of god more union more intelligence than there ever was before we arc tire tody today to dy day more acceptable to the heaven heavenly y father rather than the people ever was before although there is no doubt we still might be better an evidence of this tho the speaker sees in tho universal agitation against the latter day saints in the world in the growing animosity of the wicked and godless s against the kingdom of the god which hatred will acad lead them to ono one determined blow of enmity against the little stone from the tile mountain which will emite the ima imago c and grind it to powder zion is pros prospering ereg zion is growing adren I her children are getting better and at the same time the world are growing and their hatred against us its is becoming more intense they will yet seek to deprive us of the last liberty we possess the influence of congress and the supreme coultas court Cour tas as well as of tho the hireling lii priesthood also the whole armed forces of the nations will be arrayed against us troubled times are ahead of us times when we shall be tried and the weak kneed and tremulous will fall away while those who are pure and true as gold and silver will shine forth imperishable in the crucible of probation in proportion as we are faithful and dili diligent ant these things will be ba hastened along will all have ilave enough t to try u us in our faith and hence we ought to steadily endeavor to improve in everi every good pu purpose and practice that zion may become terrible to her enemies As long iong as is we are gods people chosen out of the world we will find the world hate and persecute us the very principles rev revealed caled by god will constantly arouse our adversaries against us they will always combat us even on an the fundamental rock of our faith on revelation this as in the days of llie the missouri persecutions is offensive to the adversaries of tho the lord and they will battle against it as they did in tho the past this the speaker showed by historical references to the origin and ea early 11 development of the church M the savior said the way to eternal life was a straight and narrow one it ia is comparatively easy to float with the common current to tread in the tile old trodden paths path thus tho the kingdom of god has not spread so very far while the kingdoms of the devil devil have spread far and wide hero here tho the speaker referred to spiritualism ritualism as one of tho the spiritualism sti delusions by y which the devil ensnares tho the un unwary ivary prest smith in conclusion said that the devil will always defeat himself every time he lie has bils sought to prevent the accomplishment of gods purposes he lie haa has forwarded t |
