tho the iron tongue of time has proclaimed the hour of midnight to night has been a very remarkable one the events which have marked its progress have been of such an all impressive character as to inspire the minds of those who have marked their occurrence with reflections of no ordinary kind while the year 1881 hag been a year of peace prosperity and gen cral good health to the people of utah it has been far otherwise to many of those in the united states and many other nations alie early part of the year was marked by some of the bitterest weather and severest snow snowstorms storms y in this nation that has been wit i jessed for many years past and gave cause for great alarm to the dwellers tellers dt in the eastern states these events were followed by y terrible floods which swept through towns and villages farms and fields rushing onward with fearful im impetuosity sweeping before them everything in their course that was movable causing tremendous destruction st to property and to human life the cyclones which whirled through gha a great number of the cities i in tho the east leveled to tho the ground the stately edifice and the humble cot and spread destruction and I death in their bakel severe windstorms wind storms and rains and consequent loss of crops have lave causo caus ed much suffering in many of the rural districts in england drought and late rains have destroyed nearly all the grain and other crops in in many of the agricultural districts in america utah and other parts of the west have hare measurably supplied the deficiency in some of these places but still it is feared by many who have haye visited the localities loca litie that tb at y much privation will be experienced by the people in some oi of the places where the scarcity exists in consequence of being without me means ans to purchase supplies to last them until another harvest harves st diseases have lave been numerous and very fatal and the bills of mortality have been very high many of tho the diseases have been of such a character as to confound and baffle the j skill of the most eminent physicians physician cither to trace their origin or provide a remedy for and great numbers 71 of those who were afflicted have lave succumbed to their fatal effects pestilence has been succeeded by famine and starvation has hns hurried very many human beings to an untimely grave r fires ires have lave been fearfully frequent and the losses of properly property and human life have been alarming and although they have not been so terrible as that which visited london in in september 1660 and subsequent years which consumed many thou ands of dwelling houses numerous edifices churches and other public buildings which spread over many parishes and streets entailing a loss of scores of millions of dollars still they have been immense and some p of them of such a character as to thrill with horror all who have lave become familiar with them through gli the public journals tho the most horrifying devastations by the fire fiend were the forest confra conflagrations rations in michigan last summer by which i lives and property were destroyed toan to an alarming extent the most terrible as to the destruction ot of life which has occurred very recently is the vienna fire in which over half a thousand people are lepor reported to have perished storms at sea have been wit destructive in their nature and of ab great reat frequency the number of shipwrecks reported by the english lloyds alone from the first of january to the first of november the present year were the loss of property is dated at i SL the tile loss of life is not given but no doubt it is fearful enough not long since a report was received in london england ofa terrible typhoon which the country around Har forio and bem ony oily in ill china raising the waters of tho the sea driving them inland several miles one town was completely submerged and swept away the inhabitants to the number of all perished I wars have spread their devastation tion and destruction in various parts of the earth costing Z immense amount treasure blood human life and crea creating thousands of widows and au i orl hans bins the last war with afghanistan it is said cost the british taxpayers tax payers hv many men were sacrificed i not reported and judging from the manner in which some ot of tb the in most 01 t civilized civili sed nations are increasing n their armaments it does hot appear that tha christian world is ready to beat its swords into plowshares shares and spears into brunning pru nning hooks books E earthquakes which have been more or less destructive in their results have been of frequent occurrence and have elicited comparatively little comment buethe but alie celestial phenomena have been many ninny and of such a character as to furnish ish food for serious thoughts for many people and speculation for the astronomer and crbut few if any any of them have been able to arrive at any definite conclusions as to the significance of these ethereal visitors crime and immorality have spread with fearful rapidity in every part of civilization murder a arson rapine suicide infanticide and other species of wickedness present a terrible record in ill the year 1881 two of the greatest countries on the globe have witnessed the destruction of their national chiefs by the red above mentioned calamities have afflicted mankind abroad we have cause for gratitude for the peace we have bave enjoyed and the almost entire immunity immunity y from the evils that have aall afflic teI other portions of the earth we have lave been gratified too to record the many improvements in our thriving na city and the towns adjacent during luring the past year and hope to witness its continuous development and pr which we shall take pleasure in recording the tile future of 1882 is of course hid bid from oar our view what it may be we do not know doubtless much of the history of the past year will repeat itself be the occurrences what they may we ahall shall watch their development with interest anden and endeavor faithfully to chronicle them to do so forthe for benefit and
