Show HIGH SCHOOL OPERA TO BE ELA. 1 BORATE AFFAIR. The High School Opera this year is to be more pretentious than anything atemptel by the students before. A larger chorus, more colorful cos-. cos-. tumes, a full orchestra and an experl- I enced cast will VI all combine to make the production memorable. "In Old Japan is the opera that has been selected and It U, as the name lmpllesi one with an oriental setting. 1 A garden, resplendent with cherry ' j blossoms and wisteria is the scene. A ', large Japanese gate forms the back ground, through which can be seen a Japanese idol. Special lighting ef. fects add atmosphere to this Betting, The chorus of sixteen boys d sixteen girls have been selected be-cau be-cau of their splendid voices. Many of them sang the opera last year and after a year of training are doing remarkable work. The costumes for the chorus are being specially made and painted in oriental designs by'he art department of one of the state universities. Not the least delightful feature of the opera will be the orchestra. Al ready larger than that of last year, it i will be augmented by musicians from elsewhere. The story of the opera deals with the adventures of Sing, a Song, a charming Japanese maid of sixteen whose dead father's will provides that at eighteen s)ie marry the mayor of Kibosho, or else forfeit her fortune. The father did thla not because he loves the mayor but because he wants his daughter to marry a real live mayor may-or and Fattedo Is the only unmarried mayor he knows. Fattedo wants his future bride to be the mot talked of woman in Japan and so he sends ber to America for two yeans. Then the fun begins. The students who are taking the roles in tbe opera are handling the ; parts very well. George Dalstrom ; and Bessie Kapple are the mayor and Slng.a-Song. Walter Alplanalp, Florence Flor-ence Giles, Bert Giles, Ethel Watkins, Tom Hurly, Lloyd Prlgniore, Bert Kapple and Dorothy Barnard also have Important parts. Besides having excellent voices these people have exceptional ex-ceptional dramatic ability and are creating some delightful characters. The performance is to be the school's contribution to the happiness of the holidays, so the entire school invites you to be present on December 22nd. |
