Show THE PACIFIC A short time since the southern pacific railroad another of the notions highways across tho the continent lifts been completed furnishing direct connection byrain by rail between san francisco alcisco and mid new orleans and other nada this ne new rout has a l grand future although it is h true that trade moves tor or a long time in old ruts and is slow leaving wonted ways for fresh it is but Tea reasonable to expect that a largo irge portion of the tile wheat ot of the pacific coast will henceforth be transported over this route jt fc is estimated that the running time between san an F francisco ran cisco and new orleans will be about nine days the time of steamers between new orleans Orlean and sand liverpool six sixteen tee to twenty days and of sailing failing ves sels forty div five days allowing allow ing a delay in y at the great gulf port the whole journey with voyage by steam would make thirty three das days from the golden gate to the T mersey or sixty by sailing RD vessel while alic present rate sailing vessels around cilc horn is days there can therefore bs be little doubt that the P will secure a good portion odthe of the transatlantic carrying in trade especially of the europe bo bounds und heat wheat export from the tilt pacific S ates this route of course can affard to carry the wheat and other productions odthe of the western slope and of the blocky dountain loun tain regions clie cheaper aper than the C P and TJ P overland combination or the vessel I line around capo cape horn I with the present great develop dc clop ment of the agricultural and industrial resources of the south new ricans rl cans ita iw natural emporium is is K i n ed to rise into arid undreamed reamed of eminence commanding com commanding mandin an exten sivo sive transport commerce with liverpool and other european marts as ns well as the south and central american parts the southern pacific R it 11 co do not therefore at least not for the present intend to employ steamers and do the holo bole shipping from san francisco to liverpool there will be enough shippers ship ners and capitalists who will ill perceive the profits to be made from the transportation between the tile mouths of the A mississippi and the the at estuary 11 ary of the mersey As to the farmers of california and to a certain degree those lofther slope and intermountain inter mountain states a and id territories the new road will prove a great benefit to them it ia is calculated that a saving of 63 per ton will be effected on the wheat r freight rates on the new route are promised to be less fluctuating and arbitrary than on the other roads and it will furnish new markets for adf agricultural products in the south uth west thus provin proving apo a po tea stimulus to ti alie I e g gr angers for foe increased production ana fi a recent interview with the tile president of the new enterprise ho be stated that the road did not intend to put any difficulties in the way of 01 tile f fanner armer or shipper by vexatious regulations C lations as done by other corporations it did not control the farmers nor shippers but took freight just as it happened to come fur for transportation transportation neither would it ha hadean vean any thin thing 11 cr to do with grading wheat bior nor made nor intended to make mak c any arrangement with shippers or insuring cargoes nor mailing making advances on bills of lading such things would bo left at present in ia the hands of shipping and commis sion houses the railroad company has lins nothing to do with insurance except binding itself to deliver the freight it takes in good condition and to pay for it if lost or damaged in transit the new arrangement will furth cr er prevent the ocean fhi lit combinations arpin ever again putting up a corner in the market now they can ean run the price up in the case of temporary mar scarcity city and except in extreme cases the farmer gets no benefit from it because it takes him irim from five to six months to get his wheat to england by I which time the price may have bave run down again but if he could land the wheat from ins granary on the liverpool dock docks in 33 days he could get the advantage of the rise or squeeze the men who are in the corner another great benefit which will result to the coast pro producer duper from the S P R R is the fact that on account of the large the time of transportation and the consequently diminished dangers it aill wall henceforth be feasible and profitable to convert the wheat into flour and ship tho the latter tah would give a strong impetus to the flouring floering flou ring interests of the pacific coast and great basin region our utah readers will easily pc perceive the berie fit to be derived by bv them from the new line of communication ni with which we ire will have direct comman communication cation in the southern F rn part f falio tho T territory errit oy the opening of markets markels the cheap transportation will ere long on call for a manifold increased activity of agriculture in our southern countries and the inexhaustible fertility of utah will bo be drawn upon to its full extent |
