left rock island with 13 passengers and 16 of a crew aboard it passed through tho the bridge and got about a half balf a milo mile abo above Y it at it 1030 tho the engineer discovered that th alie cam arx rod which is used to reverse t lie wheel waa was broken tho the boat at once began drifting rapidly down stream tho the swollen river current additional force and swiftly the craft went DOWN TO destruction when the threatening danger became beame al apparent n t mr ake skelton ton at once C rushed I into are to t the he cabin telling the passengers IS of tile accident which ya had ai happened and urging them at once to take refuge on the barges ho ile notified the pilot of what bad had happened who he exclaiming why dont they do something for tr gods sake do st l blew the whistle abr for a danger signal the tile pilot then left his wheel giving ita it a turn for port 11 and made mada a track for the barge crying as lie he went down stairs save o avo your lives she is is going to strike O the bridge in tho cabin everything ingras was frantic the women were crying rin an and d the men were about as 11 useless se no one seemed to have any idea as to what was to be and what could bo be done IN THE DREADFUL EMERGENCY the crew with the exception of tho pilot the errand clerk and the engine engineer erand and fireman are reported to have been drunk and as is terror stricken she elie drifted upon the pier urged on by the swollen current she elie bartly turned and preserved lier her starboard ar side to obstructing the pier striking it just aft of tile boiler eight persons
