Show v from dayt 24 t al 31 SICKNESS AND MORTALITY A on one of the probable cause thereof in view of the fact that mofid en has during the past summer season suffered severely from sickness and that the mortality has increased over eliat of previous years it would perhaps not be out of to say a few words on this one who have lived in ogden for the past five years will deny that the population of this city has rapidly increased sinco that time habitation and the necessary adjuncts to the same have been erected and those spots upon which nothing but sae brush could be found but a short time since are rapidly being settled upon but it seems that proper provisions for health hare with all this growth not been madaj and the removal of refuse matter garbage etc has been illy attended to it is true that we now have a sewer which will no doubt prove of incalculable benefit to the city but that is not the point every citizen should see to it that the surroundings of bis dwellings are clean and neat that out houses pig pens stables etc are removed to a sufficient distance from his house that the af fluvia may not offend the nostrils as oon as a door is opened and again it should be seen to that each householder bo compelled to thoroughly cleanse every place of this kind as often as needed every citren should as a matter of duty attend to aliis and not let these cesspools ces spools of corruption remain for months and perhaps years soaking inlo the earth and impregnating tho water of alie wells from which water is used daily and hourly for drinking and culinary purposes there are out houses noar in tho most populous portions of this city that have not we will warrant been cleaned or fumigated for at least one year one gentleman we know of has of late been compelled on account of the condition of the out houses in his neighborhood to dig a fresh well in another part of his lot tho water in the old well becoming so impure and nasty as to be totally unfit for use children are often taken sick and their parents seem at a loss to account for the fact they say my children never had an hours illness in their lives before and I am sure they have not been exposed to any disease but there is perhaps your great mistake dear friends aro you sure that everything about your premises is clean and sweet no bad smelling oufa house hog pen decays ing vegetable matter or in fact garbage of any kind around your house are you certain that even boap suds or slops of every kind aro emptied far enough off from your door that no stench can possibly reach you of course this is not tho cause for a the sickness with which we have boon afflicted but our citizens may rely upon it that if each and j taj clean of filth from ther dwellings tho difference in the health next year compared to this will astonish a groat many who may hold opinions differing with those expressed in this article it is to be hoped that our friends will attend to this matter and that our city fathers will give it their earliest attention that ogden may once more havo tho reputation of boing the healthiest place in utah ter |
