Show from daily mar SAVED A mn hl wife and three chloren rescued from a horrible death on saturday mr joshua william of the firm of L P wilson aco of thi city was at his farm in weber valley and learned that a few miles up he canyon was a family which had been snowed in for several days on making further inquiries it was found that the family consisting of a man and his wife with three small children had been residing in a cabin located in what is called cottonwood canyon during the summer and had made arrangements early in the week with par ties who came down the canyon to fetch them provisions on their re turn trip As soon ho as the latter reached the settlements a heavy snow came on completely blocking up the road and preventing the return of the provision party they however said but little until friday when an attempt was made to reach the imperiled family but the attempt proved fruitless and the project wa given up upon bearing the above facts in the case sir williams determined to make the attempt himself and sura moning to his aid two or three sturdy individuals started out early sunday morning to the beccue such was the depth of the snow however being 20 feet nearly all the way that by noon the party had only made six miles up the canyon they had not proceeded much farther be fore mr williams caught sight of a human head protruding from a snow drift about yards ahead of him giving orders for some ef the party to go ahead and reach the cabin still further up the canyon he immediately made for the drift and by dint of hard work at last reached the spot when he discovered a woman who was making desperate attempts to freo herself from the snow into which she had sunk an old shanty or stable being near the poor woman was immediately conveyed there a fire was built anc the poor woman soon revived from the extreme coli from which ahe was suf ferine both her feet frozen h irever and had she bee exposed a couple of hours longer there can be no doubt but that she would have frozen to death when she had sufficiently revived she told mr williams that her husband had attempted to reach the settlement the day before but had been compelled to desist being completely worn out with fatigue she then left the children one of them a suckling babo in his care and attempted the trip herself she had managed by dragging her body along over the snow to reach the place where she waa found by mr W the othar the husband tand f tha next morning about they were brought in safely to the settlement it seems the family had upon getting out of provisions made their way to a stable near mr williams mill and gathering together the corn wasted in the manger they ground it between a couple of rocks and ate it much credit is due mr williams for the noble and heroic manner in which he conducted the affair had it not been for his efforts in the matter it would undoubtedly have been our duty to chronicle the death of these five people |
