The following paragraph from a recent re-cent letter of the Chief of the Weather Bureau bears on the question whether the climate has changed In recent times. "In the first place, Instrumental Instrumen-tal data are not available In any part of the world for a longer period than too yeara, and even these are not accurate. ac-curate. The effect ot man's occupancy of the earth Is an unknown factor. Through bla agency large areas of the earth'a surface have been deforested and cultivated. Water has been diverted di-verted from streama and spread over UieshiX (bus transforming rieeettt Into fertile plain. The latter, In turn, through the varying fortunea of empire, em-pire, have again become arid. Wile the total effect of such changes aaaan has wrought la probably small, vho shall aay that It Is absolutely nil? In the second plare, the records of the weather bureau show that during the last fifty years there have been ttoee marked cold perloda In the South It-lantlc It-lantlc states, vis., from 1851 to 1B7. both Inclusive, from 1871 to ICS. both Inclusive, and from 189 to 101, both Inclusive, a total of twenty-en years out of fifty. All of the ytr within the above-named perloda wort not uniformly cold. Indeed, within t last-named period there were two no mal winters, vis., 1894 and 1898. Tb final concluaion appears to be that tk atatlatlra show no progressive chang In climate In this region and that the la no known a priori reason why than ahould be auch a change." |
