President Wilson today directed that on Sunday, Sun-day, November H, the American flag lo displayed at half mast on all public pub-lic buildings and naval and military posts " a token of the nation's participation par-ticipation in th. memorial Ben l es held for the heroic American soldiers, sailors, marines and others who gave their lives to their country in tho world war." In connection with the order, tho president authorized thia statement: "There has been transmitted to me a suggestion that I name Sunday. "The selection of a formal day which shall annually be set aside to commemorate com-memorate our participation in the world war will some day doubtless be; effected through legislation and already al-ready Memorial Day, rich in heroic memories, has acquired additional significance sig-nificance as being appropriate also to! the commemoration of the heroes ofi the world war. I am, however, sol heartily in favor of the suggestion that has been made that I take this occasion occa-sion to express publicly my approval of the Idea." |
