Show ! I Walt Mason u TUB w I I hi Mi 1 stand upon the shore and peep al 'creatures that Infest the deep, all sorts I of things with fins and scales from i shrimps and lobsters up to whales. (Of course you'll say, with scornful I grins, these haven't either scales or I fins; smart alecka always gather near to show where little breaks appear j As I was saying, on the shore I stand and hear the breakers roar and wonder how the things that roam forever in tho briny home can stand such mols- ture all their lives, and not get mad and beat their wives. No magazines or books nr- there, no glowing hearth, no easy chair; there's nothing for a fish to do but soak himself the long vears through, and dodge the bigger fish that strive to catch and swallow It alive. There's no place for a fish to go, no lecture, ball or movie show. I have a sympathy for all the fish that scoot around, and ply their fins and wag their tails, the sharks, the devilfish, devil-fish, the whales. I would Invite thm from the deep, and give them beds in which to sleep, and pla en where they might get dry, anil noggins of denatured de-natured rye, but they can't understand the tongue In which the Invitation's I sprung. And. maybe, os they see me I stand In solemh grandeur on the land, they wonder why 1 don't wade In. and like them wield the trenchant fin. |
