Meagre particulars havo been re-reived re-reived of a cloudburst accompanied by lose of llfn and great damage to proporty which occurred near Mitchell. In Wheoler county, Oregon. Two Uvea wore lost, Mrs. Bcthune. a woman aged 0 yoart, and Martin Smith, aged 91 yean, being twept away In tha flood and drowned. Tbey were too old to assist themselves to a place of safety, and wore beyond the rescue of stronger people. In all twenty-eight houses In Mitchell were dostroyed, and In add! tlon aeveral large barnt, one containing contain-ing thirty horses, were twept away. Bridge and Mill creeks unite several sev-eral hundred yards above Mitchell, and the converging of the rushing waters created a wall of water twen ty foct high, wblcb twept down toward to-ward tho town In a mad rush, sweep ing everything before It. The flood, fortunately, fortunate-ly, swept down on the town at a time when many of tho people were In the biiHlncss section, otherwise the loss of Ufa would have been much greater. |
