Show Whin Whistler Slept There I told a good story of Sargent, Sar-gent, tho portrait painter, which Is reported re-ported to be circulated by hi friend, W. M. Chase, a greut admirer ot Bar-gent, Bar-gent, whom he visit when In England. It la related that on ono occasion Chase and Bargent were calling on Whistler, and that during the visit Whistler fell asleep. With all of hi eccentricity Whistler seemed pa'fejlly aware that a sleeping man. wi.on he nas arrived In tho porlod uf the all-ties, all-ties, doos not form an Interesting subject sub-ject for a picture, and when be awoke and found that Bargent had taken advantage ad-vantage of the brief nap to make a hasty sketch Illustrating the manner In which Whistler entertained hla distinguished dis-tinguished guests. It la aald that Whistler Whist-ler came as near losing his temper a he could afford to, and allll retain hi reputation of unconcern for what the public might think of hire. In spite of hi urgent request Bnrgont refused to deliv er tho sketch to Whistler, or to destroy It, and In Sargont's possession this unpublished and unconventional portrait of Whistler still remains as a souvenir of the eccentric Amorlcau artist. ar-tist.
