Show MUCH IMPROVEMENT AND EXPANSION WORK MAPPED OUT FOR RAILROADS IN 1920 AND OGDEN EXPECTS A SHARE ! Much railroad improvement work is I in contemplation for 1920' and it is ex-I ex-I peeled that Ogden will get her full share of improvement work and ex-( ex-( pansion work. The roads centering at Ogdcn are i all doing a capacity business and have ; been so doing ever since the war was over. Prior to that time they wore important to the government In tho i handling of war supplies and .troops! and because of the fact that Ogden is (the strategic point of transportation to and from all directions, Ogden has had to do her full share in winning the j war through her railroad facilities. ( , Railroad construction, improvement i of right-of-way and expansion into new j territory lias been practically at a standstill since the government tool: J I over tho roads. This Is casting no re- ( flection on the government as a rail- j j road builder, but merely because of the j fact that the roads were taken over, i as a war necessity and that they were I used for war purposes only, and there-1 ' fore there was no attempt to extend 'or improve them. Officials Await Developments. Now that the time ( is drawing near when they are to again be turned back to the original operators, much improvement work is contemplated. ' Of tho steam roads centering in Ogden. Og-den. it Is impossible to state just what improvements are contemplated by each, as officials here slate that noth ing will be done in the matter until after the roads have been turned over to private ownorshlp again. However they slate it is practically certain there will be extensive improvements if it is possible to get materials, as the development of Hie roads under government attempted was upkeep. It with the growth in business. All the government attempted w as upkeep I is necessary, ofticials state, to enlarg? shops, depots, add trackage in many i places and in general increase the en-1 tire railroad equipment to bring them I to a par with tho business Ihey are now doing. i U. P. to Extend Double Track. j It is stated that the Union Pacific , will probably add more double track to their system as soon as it is possible pos-sible to do so. The Denver and Rln ' Grande also contemplates extensive improvements, both in tracks and ' equipment. The Oregon Short Line,' as part of the Union Pacific system, j will be included in tho program of Inv j provemenis during the coming year. The Southern Pacific. In line with its former policy, will begin improve jmenls at once, it is understood. Bamberger Electric Road, Of tho electric lines running Into Ogden, the Bamberger electric has made no announcement as to improvements improve-ments or additions to the road itself, but it has been announced that La-Igoon, La-Igoon, a subsidiary lo the electric com pany. is lo be improved and added to this spring with an expenditure of about $100,000 involved. Sections of this road are being double-tracked from time to time and It is a mntter of but a short time until the line is I completely double-tracked from Ogden to Salt Lake. ! U.tah-ldaho Central. The Utah-Idaho Central, another! line having Ogdpn as its southern ter- j minal. has done a remarkable business during the year 1010. The rapidly developing country through which tho main line paspes between Ogdon and I Preston, Idaho, has been developed by I thin road to a remarkable extent. It 'has been the means of opening up 'some of the finest farming districts in northern Utah and southern Idaho. It !has been a big factor in the hauling of beets from the fields to the sugar factories, loading stations having been 'erected wherever needed along the line. Branch lines have been built to Plain City and "Warren and these also lap a prosperous farming community. ' The hauling of livestock from stock : districts to the Ogden livestock centers cen-ters has been another big item in the business of the electric lines, j Passenger Business Increasing. I Passenger business on these two1 railroads has shown a big increase over lhat of former years. In fac', pnsscngor trninn on either road and in either direction are always loaded and one wonders where all of the people are going. Tims has tho electric lines linked together towns that formerly were but spots on the map. It is possible pos-sible now for a person from Logan or Preston, Idaho, lo Journey to Provo or others southern Utah towns and back in a day's time, all by olcctric trains of tho most up-lo-date type. Tliis is possible because of tho fact that the Oroni Electric connects with the Bamberger Electric at Salt Lake, lapping the rich mining and farming districts of southern Utah. Another district that has been brought closer to Ogden by electric line is the Ogden valley country. untsville, Eden, Liberty and farming farm-ing communities up througli Ogden canyon are now connected with Ogden by rail and a regular schedule is maintained main-tained throughout the year. This is one of the scenic lines of tho inter-mountain inter-mountain country and a ride through Ogdcn canyon via electric line Is well worth while. In fact, this feature is advertised widely and thousands of tourists passing ihrough take this delightful de-lightful trip each year. |
